Journeyman Documentaries: Peak Oil

Is the age of cheap oil about to come to an end? According to many experts, we are about to reach the point of “peak oil” — the level at which supply can no longer keep up with demand. This, say the doomsayers, could send economies spinning into turmoil and up-end our comfortable, urban lifestyles. But others claim predictions like this are simply scaremongering. They believe supply will match demand for decades to come. So who’s telling the truth? ‘Peak Oil’ investigates.

The era of cheap oil is over. The global economy was built on cheap energy. The impact will be seen far and wide throughout the economy.

Every country needs to develop a plan to balance its population with its resources, food, water, energy and jobs.

As the price of oil continues to rise we will adjust. We will walk a little more, ride a bicycle a little more and use mass transit a little more. We need more safe walking and bicycle paths connecting work, schools and homes. We also need more mass transit options. There once was a time when every big city had a trolley car running thru town.

We will even make energy efficiency a bigger part of our buying decision when we buy a car, truck, furnace, appliance or even a light bulb.

Biofuels can now be made from trash or waste. Every landfill can be converted to make biofuels, energy and recycled materials for new products. Since the trash is already being collected it provides an inexpensive input to the process and is more sustainable than burying the trash in a landfill.
