Expansion of airport would be an ‘economic catastrophe’

Allowing Stansted airport to expand to accommodate 10 million extra passengers a year would be an “economic catastrophe” that would contribute significantly to global warming, a public inquiry was warned yesterday.


The expansion would cost the UK money as tourists spent
Thomas Hill, QC, representing the council, said that there were 3,700 listed buildings and 75 conservation areas in Uttlesford, as well as the 1,000-year-old Hatfield Forest. He accused BAA of being “in denial” about the environmental impact of what it was planning.
