Every price is political in the great gas game

President Saakashvili, Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze and other top officials have repeatedly and flatly refused to pay USD 230 per thousand cubic metres of Russian natural gas, saying the price is ‘political’, as it much higher than prices paid by other former Soviet states. Iranian gas is likely to cost a similar amount, but at least buying Tehran’s gas means the Georgian leadership will keep its promise, and hated Gazprom will be snubbed.

However, it seems Georgia might be paying another kind of political price for its gas, and a steeper one, the price of staying in the United States’ good books.
