Egypt turns to Russia, China over nuclear energy

Following a 20-year freeze, Egypt has turned to China and Russia for help in relaunching its civil nuclear program, a move that risks ruffling the feathers of its American ally, analysts say.

During the first week of November, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is due to visit Moscow and Beijing, where the nuclear issue is expected to be high on the agenda.

“The possible aid that China could give to Egypt over its civil nuclear program to generate electricity will be one of the subjects of talks,” foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit told the state-run daily Akhbar Al Yom Saturday.
