Day without oil coming

Oil, being a finite energy source, will run out. So what should replace it? Wind power? Solar? Hydrogen? Ethanol? Biodiesel? Hydroelectric? Greater use of natural gas and coal? Even more nuclear power?

The answer is: “Yes.” That’s the answer Congress gave in the energy bill passed last year. It’s the answer President George W. Bush gave in his State of the Union address last month. It’s the only sensible answer to give.

One can debate the extent to which government should try to promote any or all options. What one cannot debate is that Americans and the businesses that power their economy need to prepare for life after oil. To assume that day will not come would be folly.
It may take much of the century, or longer, for oil to run out. But it will happen. It need be an economic catastrophe only if this nation refuses to take the long view in preparing for what will fuel America after the derricks run dry.
