Pipelines are safer than rail transport.
I heard someone on msnbc making a good point though, apparently this shale oil is more combustible than light crude? And he said if it's illegal to transport gasoline by rail, then why are they transiting this combustible heavier crude.
But otherwise he was saying we need to not use any shale at all and "leave it in the ground," which is just nuts.
USA's #1 in energy again and that's a good thing -- don't give up on it, figure out how to transport it.
And besides, to put this ONE explosion into perspective -- 37,000 Americans die in gasoline powered auto accidents every year, and over two million injured or disabled. So nothing is perfectly safe. So okay, one train blew up.
If people care about safety then what we need to do is get that google driverless system, or something like it, ramped up. That would save 37,000 lives a year and two million injured. (see, nobody thinks about this kind of thing, because it's just an accepted risk)
