Heat Waves 2017

We have had a couple of days of record heat here in Maine. Records fell in Bangor yesterday, and they may do it again today. We'll see, but it looks like we are going to be warm until Thursday.

We are running about 20 degrees above the normal temps for this time of year this week. We should have a high around 66, and a low of 45. Instead we had a low around 65 and are going to have a high around 85 today.

Yeah, Rev, I guess that's the same heat pulse moving its way east across the continent that we just had in MN

Chicago Sees Heat Wave Unlike Any Other for This Time of Year (2017)

Chicago has never seen five consecutive days with high temperatures at or above 92 degrees this late in the season. The previous streak of four or more days in a row was seen Sept. 16-19 in 1955, according to the NWS.
The hot temperatures broke numerous records over the last several days.

This is our last day of heat, but records were broken for the past week or so. Over 90 is really unusual for this time of year in Maine!

Searing Summers Becoming the New Normal in Europe

"We found clear evidence of human influence on this summer's record warmth, both in the overall summer temperatures and in the heatwave dubbed 'Lucifer'," said study co-author Geert Jan van Oldenborgh, a senior researcher at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute.

"Climate change made the summer of 2017 at least 10 times more likely than it would have been during the early 1900s", he said in a statement.

What used to be once-in-a-century calamity, in other words, is now to be expected every decade.

And if the greenhouse gas emissions which drive global warming continue unabated, a summer like 2017 will become the new normal along Europe's Mediterranean rim by mid-century, the researchers added.

Yep. PStarr, care to continue displaying your ignorance by claiming this extreme weather isn't AGW?

“There has never been a heat wave of this duration and magnitude this late in the season in Chicago,” the National Weather Service reported Tuesday evening, calling it “the only occurrence on record of 7+ consecutive 90°[F] days entirely within September” on record. Record-high temperatures were set this week in Burlington, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Green Bay, Ottawa, and northern Maine.

“It’s perhaps obvious that global warming means more frequent and intense heat waves,” climatologist Michael Mann wrote in an email to ThinkProgress. “But what is less obvious is how climate change may be impacting the behavior of the jet stream in way that causes more persistent weather extremes, giving us even more extreme and longer duration heat waves than we would otherwise expect. Many of the worst heat waves in recent history, including the 2003 European heat wave and the 2011 Texas/Oklahoma heat wave, were associated with this effect,” Mann wrote.....

'Really awful': 50-degree days possible for Sydney, Melbourne, as warming worsens

Fire is burning

'Really awful'

Dr Perkins-Kirkpatrick, who is a research fellow at the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of NSW, said some of the biggest increases in heatwaves will occur in poor nations who burn relatively little fossil fuels.

"It makes it really awful," she said. "They haven't done anything to deserve this, but these are the ones who are going to suffer the most."

While rating only "Buckley's chance" of keeping warming to that 1.5-degree lower Paris goal, Dr Perkins-Kirkpatrick said the science indicates emissions to be limited as much as possible.

"The impacts are going to be bad and we're not going to stop it," she said. "But it's never too late to try to change what we're doing."

Climate Change at Work? Weather Service Calls for Third Straight Mild Winter

Image
National Weather Service’s 2017-2018 winter temperature outlook. Orange and blue areas illustrate where warmer- and cooler- than normal conditions are favored. The numbers indicate the percent likelihood of being cooler or warmer than normal. Because there are three categories, cooler-than-normal, equal chances, and warmer-than-normal, and each has a 33 percent chance of occurring as a baseline, when percentages are above that, it indicates a lean in the cooler or warmer direction.

National Weather Service 2017-2018 winter precipitation outlook. Orange and blue areas illustrate where drier- and wetter- than normal conditions are favored. The numbers indicate the percent likelihood of being drier or wetter than normal. In suggesting slightly-above-normal temperatures and below-normal snowfall for the Mid-Atlantic, the Weather Service’s outlook is broadly consistent with several of those issued by private-sector entities.

More Than 80 San Diego Schools to End Early Monday in Heatwave

The schools have air conditioning in less than 80 percent of the campus.

San Diego County is under a Red Flag Warning until Wednesday due to Santa Ana winds and hot temperatures.
"The safety and well-being of students and staff is a top priority for the district. We want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible so teaching and learning can continue. As a result, our schools have a number of guidelines in place for planning instruction during hot weather," the district said in a statement.

A heat wave will bring triple-digit temperatures to much of Ventura County on Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Ojai will see high temperatures in the low 100s Monday and Tuesday, with Fillmore and Santa Paula reaching similar highs. The Conejo Valley and Simi Valley will reach anywhere from the upper 90s to around 100 degrees.

The triple-digit temperatures this late into fall raise the possibility of heat records.
