Heatwaves amplified by high humidity can reach above 40°C and may occur as often as every two years, leading to serious risks for human health. If global temperatures rise with 4°C, a new super heatwave of 55°C can hit regularly many parts of the world, including Europe.

Dangerous' heat wave descends on Southern California; records could fall

Image

Record-breaking heat is in the forecast for Southern California through Wednesday.

The National Weather Service said the heat poses a “dangerous situation” and urged residents to take precautions.

On Saturday, temperatures ranged from the 70s along the coast to 111 in Palm Springs. Paso Robles set a record high for the day at 106 degrees while Lancaster tied a daily record high at 105.

But the worst is yet to come.

Heat wave closes in on 123-year-old record, with more triple digits ahead

AUGUST 27, 2017 8:02 PM

Downtown Sacramento hit a high of 107 degrees Sunday, just one degree away from matching an 1894 record.

The late summer heat wave is being caused by an area of strong high pressure that is creating sinking air over California, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Hintz. “And when air sinks, it heats up.”

On Monday, Sacramento is expected to hit 108 degrees. Redding's high temperature is forecast to be 111.

Redding broke heat records on Sunday, recording 111 degrees. That topped the old record in 1988 by one degree. At 106 degrees, Modesto also broke a record Sunday set in 1944, when temperatures reached 104.

California and Oregon are having lots of fires as well. I have a friend who lives in Eugene, and she says that there have been multiple heat waves and now fires happening all around that area. That's not normal for that area, is it?

We are, of course, far above 450 in terms of CO2 equivalent...probably somewhere between 490 and 530, depending on which value for methane gw potential one takes.

But back to the specific theme of the thread:

New highest temperatures around the Bay Area after the Labor Day weekend heat wave
By Amy Graff, SFGATE Updated 4:03 am, Wednesday, September 6, 2017

A blistering heat wave gripped the San Francisco Bay over the Labor Day weekend, torching all-time record-high temperatures that had been in the history books for more than 100 years.
Downtown San Francisco soared to a sweltering 106 degrees on Sept. 1, breaking the previous record of 103 degrees set in 2000. Santa Cruz hit 110 degrees on Sept. 2, a solid 2 degrees past the city's previous record high reached in 1904.
Record-breaking heat
Hardware stores in the East Bay ran out of portable air-conditioning units and people sought refuge from the record-breaking temperatures at their local movie theater in Pleasanton on Friday.

Heatwave continues until Tuesday

Amman. Sept. 10 (Petra)-- The Kingdom will remain under the impact of the heatwave on Sunday, as temperatures become 6-8 degrees above their annual average hovering during daytime around 39 degrees Celsius in Amman and the northern regions, while jumping to 41 degrees in Aqaba.

According to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD), mercury levels will cool down at night dropping to 23 degrees Celsius in Amman and sliding to 29 in Aqaba.

Hot and dry conditions will continue to prevail over the next two days across much of the country with northwesterly light to moderate winds, the JMD added.

Aussie heatwave heading to New Zealand

The heatwave is forecast to hit New South Waves with scorching temperatures this weekend, with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warning the heat could peak at 40degC.

"If we do get to 40degC, it will be the first time that NSW has seen a 40 degree temperature in September," BoM duty forecaster Mohammed Nabi told the ABC.

"Those temperatures are well above the September averages. We're talking in excess of 10 degrees above the average maximum for many parts of the state."

USA/Chicago Late-season heat wave may break more records

Ninety-degree days are rare this late in the season. Current forecasts suggest we will have four straight days in the 90s as tropical air persists into the weekend. Worsening drought across the area will also be compounded by the unusual heat wave.

What to eat

Unread postby Whitefang » Fri 22 Sep 2017, 07:14:39

What will YOU eat after the heat?

As long as we have eachother.....

Not a long term option:

http://www.medicaldaily.com/side-effect ... and-417622

Eating human meat becomes risky due to the presence of prions — versions of normal protein that had their shape altered, losing their function, and becoming infectious. These distorted proteins can influence other similar healthy proteins, and change them, causing a chain reaction, and creating disease. Specifically, prion disease creates holes in the brain, giving it a spongiform appearance, and ultimately causes death.

Unlike viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasitic infections, which contain DNA or RNA, prions don't, which means they can't be eradicated with radiation or heat. They could be present in any nervous tissue, including our organs and muscles. However, they are most common in the brain and spinal nerve tissues.
