There are already a lot of Kurds in the 800,000 refugees en route to Germany now.

When the Kurds get to Germany they automatically qualify for refugee status as Syrian war refugees. :)

As far as Turks go, there are already millions of Turks in Germany.

Aren't you German, MBS? Why aren't you down at the train station handing out free cell phones and other benefits to the refugees entering Germany?

I wonder if Obama will continue to supply the Syrian Kurds with US air support and military aid now that they are being attacked by Turkey?

Considering that US military aid to the Turks is being used to attack the Kurds, it seems only right that US military aid to the Kurds be used to attack the Turks in return.

An angry crowd has attacked the Ankara headquarters of Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party, in a night of nationalist violence across the country.

The demonstrations on Tuesday came after several deadly attacks - attributed to the Kurdish armed group PKK - against Turkish soldiers and police officers.

Russia says will defend Kurds

Russia has promised to protect Kurdish fighters in Syria in case of a ground offensive by Turkey, a move that would lead to a "big war," the Syrian group's envoy to Moscow said in an interview on Wednesday.

"We take this threat very seriously because the ruling party in Turkey is a party of war," Rodi Osman, head of the Syrian Kurds' newly-opened representative office said in Kurdish via a Russian interpreter. "Russia will respond if there is an invasion. This isn't only about the Kurds, they will defend the territorial sovereignty of Syria."

"We are continuing to liberate our territory and it would go faster if it wasn't for Turkey," Osman said. Russian warplanes are providing support for the Kurdish offensive, which is aimed at securing full control of the Turkish border, while Russia has also promised to support the Syrian Kurds' goal of federal status, he said.

Russia has said it is helping the Syrian Kurds militarily and Nikolai Kovalyov, a former head of the Federal Security Service, the main successor to the Soviet KGB, said that Russian jets would bomb Turkish troops if they enter Syria.

The Syrian Kurds are trying to create a Kurdish autonomous region in northern Syria by uniting two territories separated by about 100 kilometers of land controlled by Islamist rebels, according to Anton Lavrov, an independent Russian military analyst.

"That is the Syrian Kurds' dream and the Turks' worst nightmare," Lavrov said by phone.

In addition to providing air support, Russia is supplying ammunition to the Syrian Kurds, according to Syria's former Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil, a Kurd who is now an opposition leader based in Moscow and is in close contact with the Russian government and the PYD. Syrian government forces are working in tandem with the Syrian Kurds to flush out Islamic State and rebels from the country's north, he said in an interview.

This is a bit concerning. Russia could wind up blundering into a war with Turkey.

The kurds have always seemed like a good group.. but if someone backs them, it really needs to be the US. Russia doing it.. that's trouble.. that's like, "war with Turkey kind of trouble."

Meanwhile Uncle Scam is throwing the Kurds under the bus:

http://sputniknews.com/politics/2016022 ... a-pkk.html

BTW, the Syrian Kurds are not part of PKK but are the only real secular opposition to Assad.

Erdoturd's forces have been shelling the Kurds north of Aleppo over the last week:

I have not heard any condemnation of Erdoturd's shelling from Obama and the rest of the NATO
hyena pack. The pack looks out for one of its own.

Good for Russia.

The US is like one of those friends who say one thing to one group, and something else, to another. It is quite obvious that the natural (freedom loving) group to support is the Kurds. But like always, money to be made by arms manufacturers always trump ideals and doing the right thing. (pun intended) And in the end, the multi-faced 'friend' ends up having none, and is the ultimate loser after the mayhem subsides.

It excuse the school-yard analogy, but it seems to be playing out true to form.

Well it's a bit more complicated than that Paulo. Just forget about the US, take it off the map..

And there is still a country called Turkey and a country called Russia, that are neighbors and have some mutual animosities that go back centuries. Which ain't got nothin' to do with the US.

So.. there's this group the kurds, that wants a "kurdistan" which would partly be Turkish territory.

So okay, now Russia is getting involved with the kurds. This escalates Russia's problems with Turkey, I would think.

Does Russia really want war with Turkey? That ain't a good idea, folks. Forget about nukes, just conventional war would be pretty darn rough.

The overarching problem here is that there is not a global leader anymore, to take leadership and get an international coalition intervention and resolution of the Syria crisis. A smaller player, like Russia, that's not leading a coalition -- that's just trouble. Russia could get itself into a war with Turkey and that's got nothin' to do with the US.

Except that we're NATO allied to Turkey. :|

Let's all hope Putin knows what he's doing.

Paulo you can't just go on about "the USA," right now we are talking about Russia and Turkey and that's the problem.

Just pure speculation: the Russians support the Kurds which is a relatively good act in the eyes of much of the world. This leads to a Russian/Turkish conflict in which NATO is obligated to join if the Turks ask. And if the Turks ask how does NATO respond: military action against Russia or the ignore the obligation?

Putin might be willing to take risks which could show NATO's unwillingness to meet its obligations. That could lead many NATO members to reconsider their relationships with Russia and the west because in reality NATO = the USA in the eyes of many in the EU.

This is definitely a high stakes game now being played. I would not say that Russia is so eager to defend the Kurds. More like, defending Assad and Syria as Russia has shown that they are intent to keeping Syria an ally of them. Kurds and Turks just happen to be a side issue with their long standing animosity for each other. However, all these forces along with the Terrorists are choosing Syria as the battlefield. Lets us deny that US has a role in what is happening. Some real tension here.

Almost 150 foreign companies supported Saddam Hussein's WMD program. Twenty-four U.S. firms were involved in exporting materials to Baghdad. Looks like half the world has helped killing Kurds for profit.

By now all with half a brain knows that double standards are the backbone of any "great" nations.

Its a wonder noone has pushed the red button and eradicated this miserable excuse for a civilisation - it would be the kind and right thing to do.

It might be a good idea to sort out "the Kurds":

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) The government of Iraqi Kurdistan, which is the N/NE of Iraq. They get along fine with Turkey and send their oil through Turkey. Their fighting force is the

Peshmerga Very effective against Islamic State (IS here), which it stopped and then drove back from Kurdish territory; rescued the Yazidis from IS. Supported by the US and Turkey.

PKK Militant group based in northern Iraqi Kurdistan that has been at war with the Turkish army in SE Turkey for years. Considered a terrorist group by Turkey, and the US too, I believe.

TAK Militant group that split from the PKK some years ago. Claims responsibility for the bomb attack in Ankara this week that Erdogan and his merry men blame on the PKK or maybe the

YPG The Kurds in Syria, very effective against IS and supported by Russia and at least condoned by the US. Loathed by Erdogan; Turkish forces have been shelling the YPG in Syria, across the border, and Turkey has been making noises about sending troops against the YPG; Russia says it will defend YPG. Turkey wants the US to have nothing to do with the YPG but the US says that they're the most effective force against IS in the north of Syria.

Kurdistan is the Kurdish lands in N and NE Iraq, SE Turkey, and NW Iran. Turkey is perennially suspicious of the Kurds--it was so long before Erdogan--because of Kurdish aspirations for an independent Kurdistan. Iraqi Kurdistan is effectively autonomous, and the Kurdish regions of northernmost Syria might become so if the fighting ever allows it. Iranian Kurds have been pretty quiet for a long time.

Most Kurds are Sunni muslims, but not all.

I believe the crux of our problem is the new Western way of thinking. We used to have pragmatic politicians and now our politics is dominated by idealists. It's a Neocon attitude that insists, the only country with legitimate interests is the United States of America. No other country, not even Russia, has legitimate interests, a sphere of influence or security concerns. Ukraine is the historic route of invasion. Russia knows it's own history. They have naval bases in Tartus Syria and in the Crimea. Just before Crimea was annexed, Ukrainians were arguing and working on legislation to not renew Russia's lease in Crimea. We have puppets in Ukraine who were killing ethnic Russians in the Donbass region to try to get Ukraine to join the EU and possibly NATO.

No one was dumb enough to consider allowing an unstable country on Russia's boarder join NATO during the first Cold War. When we had students, under possible threat in Grenada, under President Reagan, we invaded the island. I'm sure if necessary, we'd still enforce the Monroe Doctrine.

That dangerous attitude didn't exist in the first Cold War. We viewed the USSR as a dangerous threat, but also as equals. The preferred method of dealing with them was detente. Russia is not as dangerous as the USSR but neither are we. Both sides reduced our arsenals by thousands. However, we still both have more than enough to do the job. We should be behaving as though Mutual Assured Destruction still applies. President Obama is now a dangerous Neocon and I view him as far more of a threat to world peace and security than either Bush 43 or Putin. Most Russian leaders would have reacted the same way if not harsher than him.

Of course it is, because it's peakoil.com and cynicism is the one true path, so you can't be a true doomer unless you contribute your daily 2c of hatred towards The West(TM) and simultaneously absolve all other parties for their actions.

I'll bet Obama finds the situation in Syria very confusing. The US has been arming and training the Kurds in hopes they would fight IS, and now our NATO partner Turkey is now shelling them while Russia is supporting the Kurds against the Turks.

The US sponsored peace conference has just failed and the ceasefire that John Kerry negotiated to great fanfare has collapsed before it even began.

The best thing Obama could do now is apologize for his many mistakes and pull the US forces out now before they get caught up in the coming war.

Pull the US troops and jets out of there now.......before its too late.

I think since this war has lasted three times longer than WWII, and we are nowhere near victory, maybe we should just leave, grab some popcorn on the way home, and sit back and watch the show.
