Russia and Cyprus sign military deal for Mediterranean ports

Unread postby Cid_Yama » Thu 26 Feb 2015, 01:36:00

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Cypriot counterpart Nicos Anastasiades signed an agreement on Wednesday that will allow Russian navy ships regular access to ports on the Mediterranean island nation.

The Cyprus deal solves a problem facing Russia since it lost its Syrian Mediterranean base to the conflict between rebels and the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Russian news agency Tass reported that besides the navy deal, Putin and Anastasiades were also discussing the possibility of Russian planes using an air base near the town of Paphos.

Earlier this week Russia restructured a 2.5 billion euro loan ($2.8 billion) to Cyprus from 2011, reducing the interest rate from 4.5 percent annually to 2.5 percent.

Russia has attempted to create stronger ties with individual members of the European Union, including Cyprus, Hungary and Greece, in the wake of the 28-nation bloc imposing cumulative sanctions on the Kremlin. Moscow has offered financial assistance to Athens, and last week Putin received a warm welcome in Budapest.

.
No big deal , its for food and fuel replenishment , Britain has a big base there for like ages
I would think Cyprus beside being quite pro Russian is twisting the EU for more financial support
Still Cyprus is a most excellent place to have a naval base, it's the key to the Eastern Mediterranean

You get what you pay for, right? EU taking the boots to Cyprus and Greece, in the latter case doing the usual IMF pillaging under the guise of 'bailout'. And along comes Russia.

I will chuckle if Greece leases a few bases to Russia. Serves the West right.

How Gazan Natural Gas Became the Epicenter of An International Power Struggle

Michael Schwartz
February 26, 2015
An immense field of recoverable natural gas was discovered in the Levantine Basin, a mainly offshore formation under the eastern Mediterranean. Israeli officials immediately asserted that "most" of the newly confirmed gas reserves lay "within Israeli territory." In doing so, they ignored contrary claims by Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, and the Palestinians.
...
And then there was Cyprus, the only Levantine claimant not at war with Israel. Greek Cypriots had long been in chronic conflict with Turkish Cypriots, so it was hardly surprising that the Levantine natural gas discovery triggered three years of deadlocked negotiations on the island over what to do. In 2014, the Greek Cypriots signed an exploration contract with Noble Energy, Israel's chief contractor. The Turkish Cypriots trumped this move by signing a contract with Turkey to explore all Cypriot claims "as far as Egyptian waters." Emulating Israel and Russia, the Turkish government promptly moved three navy vessels into the area to physically block any intervention by other claimants.
