Re: Qatar has enough gas reserves for 200 years: OBG

If they really do have that much gas I can foresee them expanding their synfuels plants rapidly and constantly in the post peak world. It will be well worth it because they will be able to sell synthetic gasoline, diesel and jet fuel for much less than the shale gas converting plants elsewhere.

Keep up the good work guys. You are actually talking about issues that matter while most other aren't and that is why I am taking a break because there is not enough of this going on here at po.com.
How can Ludi spend 8-10 hrs/day on the internet and claim to be homesteading???

At present Qatar's gas from the North Field is partly delivered onshore for power in Abu Dhabi (Offsets Group) and the remainder is LNG which is going to be delivered to the Far East and the US. The only GTL (diesel equivalent) that is produced is in a pilot project which I am led to believe has not been very successful due to high costs and lack of efficiency. The LNG shipped into the US will almost certainly keep the price of natural gas quite low....likely in the $4.50 range for some time. My understanding is the Qataris will accept lower prices in the US in order to avoid flooding the market in SE Asia and hence protecting a higher price structure in that region. GTL sounds like it would have promise....just really hasn't shown it anywhere yet I don't think.

With tunneling complete and less than three years to go before the Doha Metro launches passenger operations, Qatar Rail is expecting to meet a number of milestones in 2017.

By the end of this year, the company said it aims to finish 70 percent of the public transport project. This entails:
•Completing track installation works;
•Taking delivery of the first four of its 75 driverless trains in Doha; and
•Awarding key operator contracts.

In a statement, Qatar Rail CEO Saad Al Muhannadi said, “We are about to embark on the most critical phase of the Rail Development Program; we will be soon transitioning from a rail developer to a rail operator.”

Qatar Rail is also focused on ensuring a “cost-effective” project completion and looking at ways to use property development, retail and advertising to help sustain its operations in the future.

What’s happening

Currently, some 37 stations are under construction as part of the first phase of the Metro.

In the second half of last year, Qatar Rail began focusing on installing electrical equipment and completing the structure of these stations.

They are expected to open to passengers in late 2019/ early 2020 in three lines: red, green and gold.

The metro will also connect to two other separate rail projects:
•The Lusail light-rail line, which contractors say will be operational by 2020; and
•A long-distance passenger and freight service linking to the GCC rail, whose timetable remains unknown.
