Z - Thanks. That fits some numbers I saw "like enough power to supply 2,000 homes". Not very impressive in a state with 28 million. The grid stability aspect makes sense. Given we use fossil fuels to back up our alts the battery systems might be the stability hedge for switching.

But just guessing since my EE base knowledge is minimal.

The former . . . well I'll let you examine that by yourself. The problem with techtopia is in the detail. Something here about batteries, evenings, storms, and . . . long wires . . .

If you ever visit an underground mine, you will find them increasingly more and more dependent on electrical equipment. From the long wall grinders, to the conveyors used to move the ore to the surface, more and more is electrical. One reason for this is that it drastically cuts the need for ventilation. I have done commissioning on mines that used virtually no FF machinery from the face to the processing facility.
When you get to open pit mining it is different, I admit. But there is no reason at all for it to stay that way. Look at some open pit mines that use literally miles of conveyor belts to move the ore to the processing plants. Any time you have equipment used at a fixed location, you can make electrical equipment work in place of FF equipment.
Yes, I am speaking of grid tied electrical equipment, but we are slowly weaning ourselves away from FF to power the grid.

hawk - "you will find them increasingly more and more dependent on electrical equipment." I've been around more the a few mines, both surface and underground. And don't recall a single one that could function if it lost 100% of its electricity. There a lot more to mining the just hauling sh*t around in a diesel dump.

Yep. Its just my opinion, but I can see most mines cutting their FF use by 60-80 % easily, without it impacting their total output.
We don't really need all the FF we use - its just been the easiest, cheapest way to get things done.
The market is beginning to see that alts are a reasonable, cost competitive method of getting things done, and the market will make it happen. Your country (Texas :-D ) is a good example of that.

Are your solar panels harvesting UV and IR?

If they are, does it use materials that requires rare earths?

Face reality, a buildout today of intermittent generators is total worthless junk.

IF UV and IR require exotic materials , kiss of death.

Todays solar *cell* is not economically legitimate...and thus the panels are economic suicide.

Another thing is for certain: Windmills can never make mass electrification happen. Windmills are scams.

Its getting more and more obvious what the real energy "solution" is:

******FINANCIAL DERIVATIVES********

"financing" Shale drilling and useless junk intermittent electricity generators.

The "price" of oil will go to $0. The "price" of electricity will go to $0. The stock prices of various stock scams such as FB will go to $99999999999999999999999999999.

The xxxxing scamworld of QE and ZIRP is pathological to the point where all the prices are total BULLSHIT.

There is no point trying to analyze systemic FRAUD on electronic networks.

Apparently the only thing of value is owning the electronic networks to do FRAUD.

Crystalline silicon PV panels harvest ONLY visible light. Therefore they are intermittent.

Intermittent electricity generators generate economic contraction. They accelerate the APOCALYPSE. They are not fossil fuel extenders.

There is no energy solution other than anti-gravity device to enable robotic ships to extract the methane from Titan.

Wind & Solar are JUNKABLES.

Even TPTB have given up on it and are focused on Shale Technology....hahahaha...more economic contraction and funny money.

Starve's views are just insane. You embrace him just because he is predicting a dystopian world that you so very much want to see emerge.

Whining about "crass mass culture" is a first-world-problem.

Read back in the archives for a description of real dystopia. Empty store shelves, cannibalism, die-off, pandemics, mutant zombie bikers.

Wrong. As fossil fuels are store-able they can be used as needed. Any intermittent power produced by the renewables reduces the use of the fossil fuels at that moment saving that fuel for when the sun goes down and the wind calms. Having say a twenty five percent renewable capacity on a total years production basis will extend fuel supplies by some twenty percent pushing off the point where a fuel crisis might trigger the Apocalypse.
That does not mean they will help or hinder Apocalypses from other causes such as socialist government policies from happening.
