In 1979 Ulf Lantzke wrote:Last year this article would have started with a call to double world coal production by the year 2000 as a response to the inevitable leveling off of world oil production. Today, however, experience in 1979 alone has lowered expectations of future OPEC oil production and reinforced the trend to a slowing down of nuclear energy capacity. Hence, it now appears that world coal production must at least triple by the end of this century if we are to have adequate energy supplies to accommodate even moderate levels of economic growth.

the 'factiod' they pull out in the commercial is that 'coal use has tripled since 1970 but emissions have actually gone down 30%'

"But yesterday was important. For a start, it was the first coal to come out of the mine since it closed in 1998.
"Development coal is the coal we needed to cut and bring out so we could progress the mine to full industrial production, so it was significant for that reason too."
Unity says the mine will be capable of producing up to one million tonnes of coal a year for some 25 years.
The drift mine is the first to open in Wales since Betws in Ammanford in 1974.
What has made a difference is increased demand and the cost of imported coal, turning mines that were not previously viable into profit-making ventures.
Unity Power chairman Gerwyn Williams said the cost of coal had risen by up to 50 per cent in six years.
"Extraction is expensive but given market conditions currently, mainly due to the increases in the economy of China and India, coal prices worldwide have increased," he said.
