MACKAY has broken a 33 year weather record today, recording the highest January maximum temperature in recorded history.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Sean Fitzgerald confirmed Mackay recorded a high of 37.6 degrees just after 2pm, breaking the record of 37.2 set back in 1985.

While today is officially the hottest January day in the city's history, the hottest day ever recorded in Mackay was back on December 16, 1964 when a high of 39.4 was recorded.

INITIAL: MACKAY is inching towards breaking the record for the hottest January maximum temperature as heatwave conditions set in across the region.

The record, set in 1985, is 37.2 and the mercury has already sky rocketed to 36 degrees just after 1pm -- and there is plenty of hours left in the day.

Residents are flocking to local pools and beaches to cool down, with an apparent temperature of 39.8 degrees recorded at 11.30am, which has only dipped by about one degree as at 1.30pm.

Elsewhere in the region, temperatures above 40 degrees have been recorded.

A high of 40.5 degrees was recorded at Moranbah Airport at 12.30pm while at Clermont, a high of 39.6 was recorded at 12.51pm....

Ohmigod that sounds awful.

Australia is basically a desert continent with little green bits tacked on to the edges ——- Not the ideal place to be when the planet is heating up.
