You scared me. I thought you had already spotted one! :) Thanks for keeping track of all this stuff. Happy New Year to you and all, but somehow I don't think it will be for most. :(

Thousands evacuated in New Zealand amid Cyclone Debbie floods
Rescue workers used tractors and boats to evacuate thousands of people at the top of New Zealand’s North Island on Thursday as flood waters from ex-Cyclone Debbie surged in what meteorologists said was a once-in-500 year event.

The effects of the former category 4 storm, one level shy of the most powerful category 5, were also still being felt in Australia more than a week after the cyclone pounded Australia’s Queensland state with the town of Rockhampton flooded.

Yeah a few minor towns were absolutely flooded. Several times in the past few months we've had rain exceeding a months expected in a few hours/days.

Debbie tore up some marinas pretty good. I think only 2 people died. Which is pretty amazing and very lucky.

NZ's been hit by "500 year floods" for the last few days/weeks, and Cyclone Cook is looking to be even worse...hitting now

@dohboi: I had to drive through that. The place is absolutely soaking from the rains a last week, and there are still pools of water everyone along farmlands I drove beside. This is apparently the worst storm to hit us in almost 60 years, so we are going to be in for a rough time.

Above-normal Atlantic hurricane season is most likely this year, in large part due to ‘Weak or non-existent’ El Nino.

Forecasters predict a 70 percent likelihood of 11 to 17 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher). An average season produces 12 named storms of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.
...
“The outlook reflects our expectation of a weak or non-existent El Nino, near- or above-average sea-surface temperatures across the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, and average or weaker-than-average vertical wind shear in that same region,” said Gerry Bell, Ph.D., lead seasonal hurricane forecaster with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center.

Strong El Ninos and wind shear typically suppress development of Atlantic hurricanes, so the prediction for weak conditions points to more hurricane activity this year. Also, warmer sea surface temperatures tend to fuel hurricanes as they move across the ocean. However, the climate models are showing considerable uncertainty, which is reflected in the comparable probabilities for an above-normal and near-normal season.

Cyclone Mora: Bangladesh tries to evacuate one million

Bangladeshi authorities are trying to evacuate up to a million people before a powerful cyclone makes landfall.

Cyclone Mora is likely to hit the eastern coast early on Tuesday, the meteorological department said.

Port cities in the south-east have been asked to display the highest warning system known as "great danger level 10". Ports further west are on level 8.

The cyclone formed after heavy rains in Sri Lanka caused floods and landslides that killed at least 180 people.

The worst flooding in 14 years on the island has affected the lives of more than half a million people. More than 100 people remain missing....

Is this a sign of runaway global warming? Or just another tropical storm offshore from a tragically overpopulated, under-served nation of desperate humans? dohboi, don't you think those unfortunate folks already know the danger?

How does posting yet another warning help anyone? Just more server-farm CO2 :x

Tropical storm possible in the Gulf in next few days

Image
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=atlc&fdays=5

Two tropical waves have the potential to become named storms over the next few days. The system closest to the U.S. is expected to move into the Gulf of Mexico by early next week and has a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm. (National Hurricane Center)

The circulation just to the Siberian side of the North Pole now has a pressure at one place in its center of 985 hPa:

If it were a tropical cyclone, that would put it (barely) within the Category 2 range.
