A cautionary note about messages of hope:
Focusing on progress in reducing carbon emissions weakens mitigation motivation
(And without lots and lots of motivation, we're all sunk. Errr, rather, we already are sunk, 'cause so few had the balls to speak the supposedly un-motivating grim truth to the masses. )
...negative emotions were strongly related to mitigation motivation and feelings of efficacy, but hope-related emotions had a much weaker relationship with these constructs...
...optimistic message reduced participants’ sense that climate change represented a risk to them...
... the optimistic message was less successful in increasing mitigation motivation than the pessimistic message...
...predictions that the optimistic message would increase efficacy did not transpire;
concerns that the optimistic message would increase complacency did transpire...
And that is pretty much the opposite of what pop-psychologists in charge of Big Enviro Messaging have been saying for decades.
I think this can already be seen in the rear view window. Everyone had to have happy messages and hopium, so no one got too worried--it's all gonna turn out OK 'cause everyone is doing "50 little things that cans save the world" blah blah blah...
Now here we are. Even total motivation from non-stop doom talk will no longer be enough to avoid lots and lots of really horrific stuff raining down on our ears in rather short order.
But still mostly most stories in MSM about whatever latest climate calamity either totally ignore the big picture or paints some kind of happy picture directly or implicitly.
(Sorry, I have to go out and strangle a small kitten or something now!)
