Air Pollution Killing 4,000 in China a Day, U.S. Study Finds

Air pollution is killing about 4,000 people in China a day, accounting for 1 in 6 premature deaths in the world's most populous country, a new study finds.

Physicists at the University of California, Berkeley, calculated that about 1.6 million people in China die each year from heart, lung and stroke problems because of incredibly polluted air, especially small particles of haze. Earlier studies put the annual Chinese air pollution death toll at 1 to 2 million, but this is the first to use newly released Chinese air monitoring figures.

Perhaps they should create an EPA. Then they would only have to worry about toxic chemicals in streams and not in the air.

Well the solution is very simple. The Chinese should invent their version of food stamps, subsidized housing and medical, and then most of those people could stay at home and not pollute the rest of the planet. Problem solved.

Air pollution isn't the only problem China has, their health & safety record is unenviable as well.

Massive explosions have hit China's northern city of Tianjin, leaving at least 17 people dead and hundreds more injured.

State media said the blasts happened in a warehouse storing "dangerous and chemical goods" in the port area of the city.

Pictures and video on social media showed flames lighting up the sky, and buildings are said to have collapsed.

Hospitals are reported to be overwhelmed with casualties.

Some of the video would not look out of place in a Hollywood disaster film!

I'm trying to help. I have been told on this very board, in many similar threads that we all work too hard and capitalism and consumption is evil. I am agreeing with that point of view. The Chinese should find ways that reduce consumption and I offered a solution that would do that very thing. If the Chinese would subsidize sloth then those millions of workers driving cars could stay at home and play video games or whatever passes for entertainment in China.

In all seriousness, China has to learn the lesson of balancing employment, consumption, and a steady GDP growth, with a concern for the environment that its citizens live in. We have done this somewhat in the USA. Not perfectly but to some extent.
