Pistol Whippin' Party Penguins' "Damn the Falls"

...They work all day and they work all night
Work until they see the light
When the morning come
They git up and do it all agin...

Hope my feet don't fail me now
Grab yer wife
git out a' town...

Water started fillin' the tunnel beneath the town
Any man that gave a damn was surely gonna drown...

So climb a tree or build a boat
Make damn sure that it will float
Close your eyes and say your prayers tonight
Sell your flour and sell your grain
Drink your bourbon and whiskey...

Get ready boys, I think we're goin' down tonight.

I'll see you when the sun comes out again...

I kind of like John Prine's Muhlenberg County

Paradise

When I was a child my family would travel
Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn.

Chorus:
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill.

Repeat Chorus:

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.

CCR - Bad Moon Rising

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
Blessed are the Meek, for they shall inherit nothing but their Souls. - Anonymous Ghung Person

Since were dealing with catastrophic climate change:

The Doors epic song 'Riders on the storm' seems applicable:

Wow, thanks for all the contributions. You all must admit, at least, that none of your bands have one to match my Pistol Whippin' Party Penguins' name!

Speaking of The Doors, The End seems even more apt:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJNsQPRSWpY

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end...

The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again

Yeah, they saw it coming in the 60's:

Here another iconic doomsday observation song from the Doors:

What have they done to the earth?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down

David Bowie had a few rather apocalyptic songs

Five Years

Pushing through the market square
So many mothers sighing
News had just come over,
We had five years left to cry in

News guy wept and told us
Earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet
Then I knew he was not lying
...
We've got five years, stuck on my eyes
We've got five years, what a surprise
We've got five years, my brain hurts a lot
We've got five years, that's all we've got

Ænema by Tool is a pretty damn doomy, and a catchy little ditty to boot.

"Ænema"
Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see Armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call L.A.
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. Any fucking day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona Bay.

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your Prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car.

It's a bullshit three ring circus sideshow of freaks
...
I wanna see it all come down.
Bring it down
Suck it down.
Flush it down.

And of course there's REM's “It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)” which is mostly jibberish but has a great chorus.
A garden will make your rations go further.

As many times as I've head this song I've never listened to all the lyrics. Very doomy. I'll have to see if I can learn to play this on the guitar.

R.E.M.'s "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"

It seems like REM is one of those bands that's absolutely everywhere until they seemingly vanish.

Bowie was so prescient with so many of his lyrics and the more you think about them the better.

Changes - brilliant!!

I see the Stretford End Arising
I see there's trouble on the way
Don't go out tonight
Unless you're Red & white
I see there's trouble on the way! :)

Another plug for John Fogerty and Credence:

Whoa, thought it was a nightmare, low, it's all so true
They told me, don't go walkin' slow, the devil's on the loose
Better run through the jungle
Better run through the jungle
Better run through the jungle, don't look back to see

Thought I heard a rumblin', callin' to my name
Two hundred million guns are loaded, Satan cries, "Take aim"
Better run through the jungle
Better run through the jungle
Better run through the jungle, don't look back to see

Over on the mountain, thunder magic spoke
"Let the people know my wisdom, fill the land with smoke"
Better run through the jungle
Better run through the jungle
Better run through the jungle, don't look back to see

I always watch the opening credits of the remake of Dawn Of The Dead for that song and crank it up. Very very scary.

"O Children", by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJyKzDtxZ2g

"O Children"

Pass me that lovely little gun
My dear, my darling one
The cleaners are coming, one by one
You don't even want to let them start

They are knocking now upon your door
They measure the room, they know the score
They're mopping up the butcher's floor
Of your broken little hearts

O children

Forgive us now for what we've done
It started out as a bit of fun
Here, take these before we run away
The keys to the gulag

O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice

Here comes Frank and poor old Jim
They're gathering round with all my friends
We're older now, the light is dim
And you are only just beginning

O children

We have the answer to all your fears
It's short, it's simple, it's crystal clear
It's round about and it's somewhere here
Lost amongst our winnings

O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice

The cleaners have done their job on you
They're hip to it, man, they're in the groove
They've hosed you down, you're good as new
They're lining up to inspect you

O children

Poor old Jim's white as a ghost
He's found the answer that we lost
We're all weeping now, weeping because
There ain't nothing we can do to protect you

O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice

Hey little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
And the train ain't even left the station

Hey, little train! Wait for me!
I once was blind but now I see
Have you left a seat for me?
Is that such a stretch of the imagination?

Hey little train! Wait for me!
I was held in chains but now I'm free
I'm hanging in there, don't you see
In this process of elimination

Hey little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
It's beyond my wildest expectation

Hey little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
And the train ain't even left the station
"Growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell."
