Why is the server always going offl-

Unread postby TheDude » Fri 08 Jan 2010, 15:14:31

- offline? :P Every day. Is it located in Islamabad or something? Does a nearby passing freight train derail it? Does the sysop turn it off to go to lunch?

No. Actually it is powered by Google-Energy(tm) and Google-Energy (tm) really powered by Farmer John's methane digester behind the still, next to the trailer.

You should have been here in the old days when the site used to take like 1-2 minutes to process a post.

TheDude and I are the old days. We used to post HUGE WORDS that caused the system to slow down. Now? Who knows?

Really. Noob. Arriviste.

 I'm enjoying being labeled a cornucopian too, for posting pertinent info in that Cantarell thread. Never thought that would happen! I'm the Dude, man! We live on a world with finite resources that really tie the room together!

Well do I remember the days of the sluggish server. I'd hit the Submit button, then go read about something else, make a pot of tea, change my car's engine oil...

Maybe the server is narcoleptic?

REALLY!!!
Don't you f&*%%# hate it when you write a 200 word reply and press submit and get a F%$#@ screen saying the server can't be found (read: YOU HAVE JUST COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY WASTED 10 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE!!!)

I just hit Back on the browser and copy the post before it gets gobbled up for good. It's the site going on coffee break every two hours that gets to me. Other forums and blogs have a 1/10th of the snafus peakoil.com does.

Yeah, done that, but then I get complacent and it happens again. I agree that I have never come across any site with so many glitches. I am around the net a lot. This tends to happen with totally new sites a bit but once established they are stable. Not peakoil.com.

What has to be done to fix this? It seems to be getting progressively worse, more often than not the last two days when I check the site it is down and I can't check the forums.

Today I am logged in on the Forums pages but when I go to the News or Submit News pages I'm not logged in and clicking on login takes me to the Forums page.

The good news is, this week I'm not seeing the PHP-NUKE icon in place of the PO icon on the News page.

You know that phrase, "We *could* tell you, but, then we'd have to ... ?"

Doesn't apply here. I have NOT heard anything, but, if I remember correctly, the last time we had this problem, the server was fighting off DOS attacks.

Of course, it could also be that the server has developed AI and is doing its darndest to get rid of a few of our worst posters for us by frustrating the heck out of them!

Indeed. This frustrating situation is becoming worse by the day. For well over a month (IMO). This used to occur (for me) mainly for a few hours mid-day - EVERY day. Now, this is occurring morning, noon and night. Recently it seems that PO is 'down' more often than it is 'up' - which is FKN "nuts". HINT : This (too) is NOT "sustainable". Has someone been forgetting to feed the gerbil running in the treadmill generator?

There are several reasons why this can happen. The web server is basically not responding to requests from your browser.

If the database connections are not being closed in the code and the number of connections increases until the server stops responding, that can do it.

If there is a loop that has not been closed, that can do it.

Memory leaks can do it, but really shouldn't in a robust web server with managed code. It should clean that up by itself.

Log files filling up can do it.

If the database is having problems for some reason (logs, indexes out of whack, partition not sized correctly, searches using too much overhead), that can do it.

Finally, the connection itself between the web server and database itself can become problematic if there are hardware, driver, or firewall issues.

It looks to me like the web server itself is crapping out though. If this is Apache, a quick check of the logs, as long as there is decent error trapping, should tell what is going on.

Actually it is pointless noise like the above that is slowing the system.
