Is there oil in the Arctic Ocean?

Unread postby DesuMaiden » Thu 11 Dec 2014, 23:57:28

Yes or no? And how much oil is there in the Arctic Ocean? I heard there is 600 billion barrels of oil in the Arctic Ocean. But drilling the Arctic Ocean will be a huge challenge as there is ice flows all year around.

desu,

Kind of a moot point. We can't afford to burn known reserves, never mind the stuff we haven't found yet. Besides, 600 billion would be an 18 year supply for the world at present rates of consumption, if we were able to extract it quickly, and cheaply enough. This too, will also run out.

If we hope to have a future on this planet, we need to change our priorities. Oil is not in our future. The time to make positive changes is now, or never.

"Yes or no?" A simple question so a simple answer: yes...oil is being produced today from under the Arctic ocean.

I thought they hadn't started drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean yet.

Lets see......I was involved in a few wells back in the seventies. As I remember there were close to 200 wells drilled over a period of about 10 years. Lots of discoveries of both oil and gas but not enough to be commercial given the remoteness.
Companies at the time actively drilling were PanArctic Oils and Dome Petroleum.
