Russians don't even need all that. With GPS advanced targeting systems, a first strike is winnable now.

This tremendous shift in paradigm has amazing consequences nullifying mutually assured destruction. Of course this will never be mentioned, people would freak out.

Yes. basically Russian can just destroy all US satellite and not only satellite but all electronic equipments too.

And then submarines would launch counterstrike, even if EMP attack actually worked, and I doubt so very much. However I agree, that once body counts are made Russians would seem to be better off than Americans.

Reasons?
1. Vast land devoid of many population centers.
2. Lack of extensive infrastructure.
After first few dozens of Russian towns and few dozens of military installations Americans would run out of nukeworthy targets.

So after few dozens of targets are gone there would be nothing to nuke left. So 0.5Mt warheads would be wasted to kill few hundreds of villagers here and there.
Poor "EROEI".

Population center are not strategic targets as such, power stations ( including nuclear stations ), harbors ,canal locks ,bridges ,rail nodes , communication centers, command centers the Pletsek and Baikonur lanch sites plus of course missiles sites , units of the northern Pacific and black sea fleet ( I know it's in Ukraine but really who care) after a successful first strike the large urban populations are a liability .

This is a pretty ugly scenario ,with their strategic forces decapitated the Russian response could be to go for germ warfare just to keep the U.S. busy. Either way both Russia and the U.S. run considerable risks of killing each other while China laught it's head off.
