The recent Canadian election provided a timely example of why people in democratic societies must be ever vigilant in understanding how the press can be utilized to advance objectives that serve the interests of only certain groups within society.

In this case, all the newspapers of Canada’s largest newspaper chain, Postmedia, were ordered to publish editorials urging voters to re-elect the Conservative party of prime minister Stephen Harper.

That resulted in the editors of the opinion pages of both the flagship National Post and the Ottawa Citizen questioning such a blanket order. The editorial-page editor of the National Post was denied the right to write a dissenting opinion and resigned from the position.

Editorial writers at the Citizen left their jobs a month later.

Pathetic.

Remember this drivel?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2 ... force.html

Russia’s Giving ISIS An Air Force

Putin’s air campaign in Syria is not only supporting Assad, it’s giving cover to fighters from the so-called Islamic State.

Eat shit Michael Weiss:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 54771.html

There were no "moderates" in Palmyra it was all Daesh and it was Russian air support that made all the difference. Russia gave the SAA a viable air force and Daesh is on the run.

Unfortunately most people living in the utopia of freedom calling itself NATO consume Michael Weiss type quality "news" and believe it.

Anyone able to contain bias can see right through it. Aside from their naval base, Russia will be home inside of a year, minimal costs. How dumb do the US droogs look now?

Historian discovers that the Associated Press may have worked a little too closely with Nazi Germany

The Associated Press is in danger of being added to the long list of U.S. companies that cooperated with Nazi Germany.

Historian Harriet Scharnberg has claimed in a new journal article that during World War II, AP went as far as hiring Nazi propaganda officers as reporters in a bid to remain in Germany. That would suggest that the AP effectively assisted in Adolph Hitler's efforts to control the press domestically and spread misinformation around the world.

The AP did this as part of its agreement with the Nazi party to remain in Germany under its rule. Many other media outlets were forced to leave the country due to the regime's strict regulation of the press, which prevented the publication of anything that could "weaken the strength of the Reich abroad or at home."

The Guardian, which first reported on the article, noted that AP images were also used in anti-semitic propaganda, including a picture of then-New York Mayer Fiorello LaGuardia that appeared on a Nazi pamphlet entitled "The Jews in the USA."

The paper also noted a particular instance in which the AP reported one side of a pair of massacres in the Ukranian city of Lviv. Nazi troops, after finding evidence of a mass slaughter by Soviet troops, perpetrated a revenge campaign on the city's Jewish population. Only pictures of the Soviet atrocities emerged.

The list of U.S. companies that are alleged to have worked with Nazi Germany in some capacity is unfortunately long and includes major names including IBM, Texaco, Chase Bank and Ford.

The Koch family, a major force in the Republican party, was recently the subject of a new book that alleged its patriarch had helped build a large oil refinery in Nazi Germany. (... Don't forget the Bush family)

A Media Unmoored from Facts

By Robert Parry

Several weeks ago, I received a phone call from legendary investigative reporter Seymour Hersh who had seen one of my recent stories about Syria and wanted to commiserate over the state of modern journalism. Hersh’s primary question regarding reporters and editors at major news outlets these days was: “Do they care what the facts are?”

Hersh noted that in the past – in the 1970s when he worked at The New York Times – even executive editor Abe Rosenthal, who was a hard-line cold warrior with strong ideological biases, still wanted to know what was really going on.

Next time some MSM drone goes on about "state controlled media" in some designated enemy state the media consumer should ask themselves who is really "state controlled" and who bothers with facts.

Brazil's political process 'damaged by partisan press' claim journalists

Whatever the outcome of the indictment – which accuses Ms Rousseff of mismanaging the economy, and which could see her either being ousted, resigning or surviving – media experts argue the “persistent distortion and manipulation of the news coverage of the political crisis” by the country's mainstream media has handed an overwhelming advantage in the opinion stakes to forces aligned against the country’s first female President.

Bia Barbosa, a journalist and coordinator of the Brasilia-based National Forum for the Democratisation of Communication (FNDC) told The Independent: “The media has used the power of images and words to build a narrative designed to influence public opinion. What we are suffering, on a daily basis, is an absence of parity in the press and this is threatening our country’s fragile hold on democracy”.

Brazil’s media ownership is concentrated in the hands of a few domestic conglomerates which dominate the market, and are owned by a wealthy elite with historic allegiances to right-wing parties. These same political parties failed four times to defeat Ms Rousseff’s Workers' Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) at the polls.

If I am not mistaken the overwhelming majority of the countries have little actual press/media freedom as they are either controlled by the govt. or elite corporations.

Well the coverage from this article and accompanying video seem definitely intended to convey an anti Socialist message. It blames all the woes of Venezuela on the Socialist government. What we do not get to hear or learn about is how much of the situation currently occurring in Venezuela has to do with meddling from outside including sanctions, paramilitaries and destabilizing tactics. Also, the Oil situation and how the low oil prices may have contributed to this dire economic situation there. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-04-1 ... s-overflow

UC Davis thought it could pay to erase a scandal from the Internet

Image

The University of California at Davis shelled out some $175,000 to consultants to clean up the school’s online reputation following a 2011 incident in which campus police pepper-sprayed student protesters, according to documents cited by the Sacramento Bee.

The newspaper reported Wednesday that the documents — including proposals and purchase orders — reveal that the school paid to have negative Internet search results scrubbed to help the reputations of the university and its chancellor, Linda P.B. Katehi.

In January 2013, UC Davis signed a contract with Nevins & Associates in Maryland for “eradication of references to the pepper spray incident in search results on Google for the university and the Chancellor,” according to the proposal. The cost: $15,000 a month for six months.

“Nevins & Associates is prepared to create and execute an online branding campaign designed to clean up the negative attention the University of California, Davis, and Chancellor Katehi have received related to the events that transpired in November 2011,” the proposal said.

Poll: Vast majority of Americans don't trust the news media

Trust in the news media is being eroded by perceptions of inaccuracy and bias, fueled in part by Americans' skepticism about what they read on social media.

Just 6 percent of people say they have a lot of confidence in the media, putting the news industry about equal to Congress and well below the public's view of other institutions. In this presidential campaign year, Democrats were more likely to trust the news media than Republicans or independents.

But trust today also goes beyond the traditional journalistic principles of accuracy, balance and fairness.

Faced with ever-increasing sources of information, Americans also are more likely to rely on news that is up-to-date, concise and cites expert sources or documents, according to a study by the Media Insight Project, a partnership of The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the American Press Institute.

The poll shows that accuracy clearly is the most important component of trust.

Nearly 90 percent of Americans say it's extremely or very important that the media get their facts correct, according to the study. About 4 in 10 say they can remember a specific incident that eroded their confidence in the media, most often one that dealt with accuracy or a perception that it was one-sided.

Watchdog: Media freedom suffers ‘deep and disturbing decline’ worldwide

WASHINGTON – Media freedom around the world has suffered a "deep and disturbing decline" due to by pressure from governments and businesses, an international media watchdog said Wednesday.

The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders said in an annual report that many of the world's leaders have developed "a paranoia" about journalism and are clamping down on the media, while coverage in privately-owned outlets is increasingly shaped by corporate interests.

"The climate of fear results in a growing aversion to debate and pluralism," said Christophe Deloire, secretary-general of Reporters Without Borders. "Journalism worthy of the name must be defended against the increase in propaganda and media content that is made to order or sponsored by vested interests."

While Europe has the freest media, according to the report, some countries, such as Poland fell sharply on the press freedom index by tightening government control. In Hungary, the government has also sought to impose restrictions on press freedoms.

Journalists in the Middle East and Africa fell victim to terrorism, armed conflict and intimidation by authorities. In Latin America, reporters were constrained by organized crime, violence and corruption. In the United States, they faced cyber-surveillance. United States ranked 41st (180)

The decline in media freedom was also observed in east Asian democracies such as Japan and South Korea, while in China, "the Communist Party took repression to new heights," the study said.

In post-Soviet countries, freedom has declined steadily, with many countries following the example of Russia, where government critics face persecution. Ukraine was a notable exception, seeing an improvement due to a decline in violence in the separatist conflict in the east of the country and some reform, though many problems still remain.

Perhaps this "watchdog" should direct its muzzle towards NATO member Turkey and see how much freedom there is there. While these clowns brazenly claim there are "persecuted" critics in Russia, in Turkey newspapers are shut down and journalists are thrown in the slammer for reporting the truth about Erodgan's Daesh oil racket. I dare this "watchdog" to provide any similar examples in the case of Russia. Give us a single name of a Russian journalist doing jail time. "Pussy Riot" were a bunch of hoodlums that got the book thrown at them after they escalated their law breaking. They were not happy getting $17 fines. Well, cry me a river. They weren't "government critics" but foreign sponsored activists designed to feed the NATO anti-Russian propaganda narratives.

Here is an exchange between Putin and one of those mythical persecuted critics in Russia:

https://youtu.be/Zl90fme0XEc

Russian taxpayers are funding pro-NATO propagandists who openly attack "tyrant" Putin. Let's see them try to pull this in NATO member Turkey.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/ ... ournalists

Meanwhile NATO propagandists spread blood libel and defamation about Russia by essentially ascribing to it the conditions in Turkey. NATO media consumers need to go to alternative and fringe media to get news about Russia that is at least partially balanced. Russian media consumers can partake of the NATO narratives in their MSM.

Disgusting persecution of a German comic who dared lampoon butcher Erdogan. I dare anyone to show me a similar case in Russia where some Putin critic who does not commit actual crimes gets taken to court. Jan Bohmermann did not commit any crime.

Funny how they missed this ridiculous law even after de-Nazification during the 1950s. As noted in the above article it was used on two occasions after WWII. Merkel is a piece of work for pandering to Erdogan. Every accusation leveled against Putin is actually true in the case of Erdogan.
