In post-Soviet countries, freedom has declined steadily, with many countries following the example of Russia, where government critics face persecution. Perhaps this "watchdog" should direct its muzzle towards NATO member Turkey and see how much freedom there is there. ...

Actually they did

In the same company as North Korea (179), Somalia (167, Saudi Arabia (165), and Egypt (159)

Both Zimbabwe (124) run by a dictator for life and shit-hole Afghanistan (120) beat it.

Let's face it, the West has been supporting dictators, despots, and criminals for over 40 years. It's just that MSM has been doing a good job of sugar-coating and covering it up.

Now the lies are getting too big so they have to arrest or murder journalist to keep it bottled up.

Alas

Pentagon Official Once Told Morley Safer That Reporters Who Believe the Government Are “Stupid”

“I can’t understand how you fellows can write what you do while American boys are dying out here,” he began. Then he went on to the effect that American correspondents had a patriotic duty to disseminate only information that made the United States look good.

A network television correspondent said, “Surely, Arthur, you don’t expect the American press to be the handmaidens of government.”

“That’s exactly what I expect,” came the reply.

An agency man raised the problem that had preoccupied Ambassador Maxwell Taylor and [U.S. spokesman] Barry Zorthian — about the credibility of American officials. Responded the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs:

“Look, if you think any American official is going to tell you the truth, then you’re stupid. Did you hear that? — stupid.”

One of the most respected of all the newsmen in Vietnam — a veteran of World War II, the Indochina War and Korea — suggested that Sylvester was being deliberately provocative. Sylvester replied:

“Look, I don’t even have to talk to you people. I know how to deal with you through your editors and publishers back in the States.”

At this point, the Hon. Arthur Sylvester put his thumbs in his ears, bulged his eyes, stuck out his tongue and wiggled his fingers.

Note that back in 1965 reporters actually had some resistance to this government BS. But today reporters think that getting their information from State Department briefings is real journalism. Pathetic.

It is dangerous to broad-brush journalists. Ever listen to the weekly State Department briefing on XM Sirius' POTUS channel? Some pretty sharp journalists there...I really Like Matt Lee with the AP. He is a polite pit bull with a major case of skepticism regarding government truth-telling. Here's one example:

I will broad brush them based on the broad brush of government propaganda that is force fed to me via the so-called independent MSM. A freaking chorus singing from the same song sheet on every geopolitical subject. Anyone with a functional IQ can tell since the chorus does not even take a few days to start producing perfectly synchronized singing on every subject and does it instantly. This includes Kerry's BS about how al Nusra (aka Al Qaeda Syria branch) are moderate "rebels". One or two journalists who are on the ball does not determine the stream of official excrement that flows through the newspapers and the TV news.

The MSM was busy repeating how most Americans thought that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 911 as if it was some sort of natural phenomenon and not the result of their own goosestepping official drivel. This was a way of justifying Bush's policy as being for the people and having their support. No, the MSM these days shows diversity of opinion within a very small box. For example whether they are rabid pro-Republicans or moderates who give the Democrats the time of day.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights blamed Russian Aerospace Forces for conducting airstrikes in Idlib, it seems the group has once again spoken out before getting their facts straight as the exact same photo was first used by Al-Jazeera six months ago.

Reuters reported citing the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that Russian Aerospace Forces had allegedly carried out airstrikes in Idlib.

Reuters and the rest of the NATO MSM use the one-clown-act called the "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights" as some sort of God's spokesman for the source of truth.

Cute how the random shelling of civilians by the Kiev regime forces in the Donbas over the last two years is a non-story in the NATO MSM. It wasn't even a story for a short period of time. The only thing the NATO MSM spreads is tin foil hat conspiracy theories that it is the Donbas rebels shelling themselves. In like the most epic false flag in history.

(*) "Kosovo had a UN-mediated referendum on secession which made it legitimate" according to Obama. No such referendum was held. Obama was bitching at the time about the Russian majority in Crimea holding a real referendum and asserting the rights they were robbed of in 1991 and saving themselves from Washington sponsored Banderite vermin.

Ukraine Honors Nationalists Whose Troops Butchered Jews

Bandera and Shukhevych collaborated with Nazi forces that occupied what is now Ukraine and are believed to have commanded troops that killed thousands of Jews. Once regarded by Ukrainian authorities as illegitimate to serve as national role models because of their war crimes against Jews and Poles, Petliura, Bandera and Shukhevych are now openly honored in Ukraine following a revolution spearheaded by nationalists in 2014.

But according to the NATO MSM the Kiev regime is composed of western European style democrats. As long as some collection proclaims its hate against Russia or some other country that the USA designates as the enemy to serve its geopolitical ambitions, then anything is justified. We saw this in Libya when the Salafis supported by Washington rounded up blacks and put them in cages:

Snapshots From a Trip to Russia to Talk ‘New Era’ Journalism

We debated dicey topics that largely have been off-limits in the dialogue here in the U.S. And I think that’s what was the most striking: Journalists from places like China, Syria, Lebanon, the U.K., South Africa, Russia, Japan, Sri Lanka, and India went to the former Soviet Union to speak openly about global trends toward censorship.

What did I learn?

It’s bad all over.

Increasingly organized and sophisticated efforts to shape the news narrative is a subject I addressed in my New York Times best-seller “Stonewalled,” and I’ll elaborate upon it in an upcoming book. But these important topics have been only whispered of and complained about off to the side at journalism conferences I’ve attended in the U.S.

People always take things for granted. They think that if they live in a "democracy" that it will always be so. It is not so simple in the real world.

Truth is in danger as new techniques used to stop journalists covering the news

The truth is being suppressed across the world using a variety of methods, according to a special report in the 250th issue of Index on Censorship magazine.

Physical violence is not the only method being used to stop news being published, says editor Rachael Jolley in the Danger in Truth: Truth in Danger report. As well as kidnapping and murders, financial pressure and defamation legislation is being used, the report reveals.

"In many countries around the world, journalists have lost their status as observers and now come under direct attack."

There's an increasing trend to label journalists as "extremists" or "terrorists" so governments can crackdown on reporting they don't like. According to Index's Mapping Media Freedom project, which tracks attacks on journalists in more than 40 countries, 35 incidents were reported where journalists were being linked to "extremism" to restrict reporting, 11 in Russia and others in Belgium, Hungary, France and Spain.

Veteran journalists say certain countries including Syria are becoming almost impossible to cover. And citizen journalists in Syria say they are under enormous pressure to stop reporting but feel a responsibility to carry on despite the risks, particularly since so few international journalists are left in Syria. "All we can do is persevere, coping with the fear and the risks," one told Index.

I'm Sick of the So-Called "News"

Honestly, it doesn't matter what day of the week or what time of day a person tunes into the 24-hour news networks, he or she can always find out the latest vapid and boorish insult that's spewed from Trump's lips.

The problem is… it isn't news!

It's nothing but pure infotainment.

The corporate commercial networks are much, much happier presenting personal drama in the form of packaged infotainment and faux outrage rather than any sort of programming in the public interest.

... The corporate media drives viewership and profits by airing personal drama over public policy, and the end result is that viewers turn off the TV at the end of the day as ill-informed as they were when they tuned in.

There's no silver bullet for this problem, because this crisis in our media is the result of more than 40 years of conservative policies that have radically altered our news media.

One problem is that corporate commercial broadcasters don't have any reason to talk in-depth about real issues, their only aim is to get more viewers so that they can get more advertisers, CBS chief Les Moonves made that unsettlingly clear during the primaries last year.

Another problem is that groups like Northrop Grumman, the American Petroleum Institute and the Pete Peterson Foundation buy the ad spots, so networks don't want to talk about reining in the military industrial complex, or the realities of human-made climate change, or about the popularity and success of Social Security that Peterson wants to privatize to his buddies on Wall Street.

Likewise, anti-union telecom giants like Comcast and Verizon don't just own the broadband infrastructure, Comcast actually owns MSNBC! So you're unlikely to hear anything of substance about any real labor issues, or net neutrality, or about the Trans-Pacific Partnership which they and/or their trade groups and lobbyists helped negotiate.

... When you look past the brute, behind the knave and beneath the hair, there’s no there there: no policies, no plans, no grand vision. Just appeals to base instincts and violent impulses by a totalitarian wannabe.

... According to Chomsky, the most effective way to control a populace is to severely limit the parameters of debate, but have the debate within those hedged parameters be vigorous so people think something of worth is actually taking place.
http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/wil ... in-history

... The spectacle of titillating and infantilizing consciousness and public discourse with a flood of shocks, sensations and simplistic views has become the hallmark of a broken political system now largely controlled by the ideological extremists who inhabit big corporations, hedge funds, and the ranks of the ultra-rich.

Trump’s rhetoric, along with the discourse of other extremists, echoes Hannah Arendt’s insight that totalitarianism is produced, in part, by making human beings superfluous, ignoring their voices, and silencing them in fascistic discourses of certainty, absolutes, and unaccountability that allow no space for critical thinking, informed judgment, and critical agency.

Yes and that is why the Internet is so crucial it allows one to chose what one believes are objective sources for particular stories or subject matter, it allows for prolific research to connect dots and so allowing one to get a credible perspective and thus reach a credible, accurate and truthful conclusion. Assuming of course that is what one wants and not confirmation of wishful thinking

"Cherry picking" and "eyes of the beholder" are synonyms.

You're basically exhibit A of what the article describes. If it isn't coming from Zerohedge or Fleeing Vesuvius or some other doomer blog, you aren't interested.

Pentagon paid PR firm $540mn to make fake terrorist videos

The Pentagon paid a UK PR firm half a billion dollars to create fake terrorist videos in Iraq in a secret propaganda campaign exposed by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

PR firm Bell Pottinger, known for its array of controversial clients including the Saudi government and Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet’s foundation, worked with the US military to create the propaganda in a secretive operation.

The firm reported to the CIA, the National Security Council and the Pentagon on the project with a mandate to portray Al-Qaeda in a negative light and track suspected sympathizers.

Both the White House and General David Petraeus, the former general who shared classified information with his mistress, signed off on the content produced by the agency.

The Bell Pottinger operation started soon after the US invasion of Iraq and was tasked with promoting the “democratic elections” for the administration before moving on to more lucrative psychological and information operations.

Former employee Martin Wells told the Bureau how he found himself working in Iraq after being hired as a video editor by Bell Pottinger. Within 48 hours, he was landing in Baghdad to edit content for secret “psychological operations” at Camp Victory.

The firm created television ads showing Al-Qaeda in a negative light as well as creating content to look as though it had come from “Arabic TV”. Crews were sent out to film bombings with low quality video. The firm would then edit it to make it look like news footage.

They would craft scripts for Arabic soap operas where characters would reject terrorism with happy consequences. The firm also created fake Al-Qaeda propaganda videos, which were then planted by the military in homes they raided.

Employees were given specific instructions to create the videos. “We need to make this style of video and we’ve got to use Al-Qaeda's footage,” Wells was told. “We need it to be 10 minutes long, and it needs to be in this file format, and we need to encode it in this manner.”

The videos were created to play on Real Player which needs an internet connection to run. The CDs were embedded with a code linking to Google Analytics which allowed the military to track IP addresses that the videos were played on.

According to Wells, the videos were picked up in Iran, Syria and the US.

"If one, 48 hours or a week later shows up in another part of the world, then that’s the more interesting one,” Wells explained. “And that’s what they’re looking for more, because that gives you a trail.

The Pentagon confirmed the PR firm did work for them under the Information Operations Task Force (IOTF) creating content they say was “truthful”. The firm also worked under the Joint Psychological Operations Task Force (JPOTF). The Pentagon said it could not comment on JPOTF operations.

US law prohibits the government from using propaganda on its population, hence the use of an outside firm to create the content.

The real Climategate was Exxon, the Koch brothers and other companies spending hundreds of millions of dollars to push climate change denial. This is an example of a real Mediagate, where Washington spends hundreds of millions of dollars to spread lies about Syria. But of course we are never going to be agitated about real "-gates" just crap like stolen climate scientist emails taken out of context or some two bit story about MSM shenanigans. The system will never really challenge itself.
