The initial scenario reminds me a little bit of that plot premise in the (moderately bad, in my opinion) sequel The Ringworld Engineers, where the galaxy is due to be fried by the radiation from a series of supernovas in the core, necessitating the construction of Ringworld as a sort of refuge millions of light years away.

Yes over two years away, but very cool if you can get to see it;

25 facts you should know about the August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse

http://cs.astronomy.com/asy/b/astronomy ... lipse.aspx

And just like the triple crown winning horse, this hasn't happened in the US in 38 years (when it does happen.)

Time to plan to see it;

Especially if you live about 1 hours drive from the path of totality, like I do. I plan on being somewhere north of Nashville on that day.
How cathartic it is to give voice to your fury, to wallow in self-righteousness, in helplessness, in self-serving self-pity.

Anyone besides me notice that the Pluto probe is nearly at its closest approach?

Would anyone at all even begin to notice if we had not once called this glob one of the only nine planets in the solar system? Now it's like--oh, a monitor is going close to some random clod somewhere out there in the cosmos....

Who the f cares??? :lol: :lol: :lol:

Clearest picture yet, and about as close as we're going to get, probably ever.

Different strokes for different folks LOL

The human brain is hard wired to make shapes out of random materials, from clouds, to craters, to faces dimly seen in darkness or mist. It can make for some really jarring double takes.

From the NASA announcement today:

New Horizons scientists use enhanced color images to detect differences in the composition and texture of Pluto’s surface. When close-up images are combined with color data from the Ralph instrument, it paints a new and surprising portrait of the dwarf planet. The “heart of the heart,” Sputnik Planum, is suggestive of a source region of ices. The two bluish-white “lobes” that extend to the southwest and northeast of the “heart” may represent exotic ices being transported away from Sputnik Planum.

Four images from New Horizons’ Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) were combined with color data from the Ralph instrument to create this enhanced color global view. The images, taken when the spacecraft was 280,000 miles (450,000 kilometers) away, show features as small as 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers).
