Chomsky: World is Just Collapsing in Laughter

Unread postby jedrider » Thu 09 Mar 2017, 19:13:27

Can't think of a better way to "Collapse", but that is the title:

http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/03/03/most-of-the-world-is-just-collapsing-in-laughter-on-claims-that-russia-intervened-in-the-us-election-an-interview-with-noam-chomsky/

I have wondered why Democrats had become cold-warriors once again against Russia. Global dominance of the remaining Oil reserves, perhaps. A good interview overall. I like the part that we must appear irrational to the rest of the world in order to leverage our destructive capacity. Well, we've just got a lot more irrational to the world and, now, to ourselves.

Serious question, for all those who think Noam Chomsky is a valuable resource.

What is it that draws you to him as a source?
Alfred Tennyson wrote:We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

From what I have heard of him, he pretty accurately describes the US as an Empire and its actions as imperialistic . Do you Tanada and others think that is inaccurate ?

Chomsky is intelligent, well read, and capable of reasoning. His chief weakness is the same as most academics - he has little understanding of the underlying motivations and concerns of most of his fellow citizens, plus a distaste for and an ignorance of politics.

One does not need to like politics to find relevence today, or to participate in politics in any way - but you must acknowledge that it exists and that it governs much of human interactions.

Oh yes those few fat cats have it all!! Funny thing is the median family income in the USA is above $59K and 75 million Americans own the house they live in. That is an owner occupied house for every 4.5 people in America. 59K is six times the world average so perhaps the "Few" is a much larger group then you think it is.

Noam Chomsky is not really a charismatic speaker, nor are his books an easy read, mostly for the detail he provides. Nor would you want to share his philosophy necessarily (if you can actually figure it out).

I take him for what he appears to be, especially considering his background in linguistics. He likes the truth and is very well suited to ferreting out the truth, if not actually to convey it. Conveying the truth is appealing to emotions, which he almost never does.

So, he's more an intellectual's intellectual: He provides the jumping platform for others to take his projects to further fruition.

Manufacturing Consent, I believe, is his most significant book for it's broad applicability. Otherwise, I don't know what he stands for, but I'm glad we have him!

I'm reminded of this story:

Two Clever Nuns

There were two nuns, one was known as Sister Mathematical (SM), and the other one as Sister Logical (SL).

It is getting dark and they are still far away from the convent.

SM: Have you noticed that a man has been following us for the past 38 ½ minutes? I wonder what he wants.

SL: It's logical. He wants to violate us.

SM: Oh, no! At this rate he will reach us in 15 minutes at the most! What can we do?

SL: The only logical thing to do of course is to walk faster.

A little while later...

SM: It's not working.

SL: Of course it's not working. The man did the only
logical thing. He started to walk faster, too.

SM: So, what shall we do? At this rate he will reach us in 1 minute.

SL: The only logical thing we can do is split. You go that way
and I'll go this way. He cannot follow us both.

So the man decided to follow Sister Logical.

Sister Mathematical arrives at the convent and is worried about what has happened
to Sister Logical. Then Sister Logical arrives.

SM: Sister Logical! Thank God you are here! Tell me what happened!

SL: The only logical thing happened. The man couldn't follow us both, so he
followed me.

SM: Yes, yes! But what happened then?

SL: The only logical thing happened. I started to run as fast
as I could and he started to run as fast as he could.

SM: And?

SL: The only logical thing happened. He reached me.

SM: Oh, dear! What did you do?

SL : I lifted my dress up.

SM: Oh, Sister! What did the man do?

SL: He pulled down his pants.

SM: Oh, no! What happened then?

SL: Isn't it logical, Sister? A nun with her dress up can
run faster than a man with his pants down.

I know one thing about him, he considers himself an Anarchist as defined as such:

Anarchism is a political philosophy that advocates self-governed societies based on voluntary institutions. These are often described as stateless societies,[1][2][3][4] although several authors have defined them more specifically as institutions based on non-hierarchical or free associations.[5][6][7][8] Anarchism holds the state to be undesirable, unnecessary, and harmful.[9][10]

So I think Tanada would find some common ground with him as a Libertarian
