Well, covert ops has a lot going for it. Both sides can have probable denial-ability.

Just like Egypt when it comes to their pipeline being blown up seven times in 2011 so far? It's a convenient way to break contract when Egypt is expected to sell Israel and Jordan gas at far below current market prices as long as the pipeline is intact to enable them to do so. Just send in the "unknown gunmen."

Iran Captures Advanced US Drone Intact

Unread postby bluekachina » Mon 05 Dec 2011, 15:32:02

Iran's armed forces brought down a US drone that officials said had violated the country's airspace along the eastern border.

Fars news agency quoted a military source saying Iran's electronic-cyber warfare unit had taken control of the aircraft and brought it ''under their possession''.

Iranian media reported that the aircraft, which officials identified as an RQ-170 drone, suffered minor damage and was in the possession of the military.

NATO's US-led force in Afghanistan said Iran might be referring to an unarmed US reconnaissance plane that went missing during a mission in western Afghanistan last week.

''The operators of the UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] lost control of the aircraft and had been working to determine its status,'' NATO's International Security Assistance Force said. ''We have no indication that it was brought down by hostile fire,'' a Pentagon official said.

If an RQ-170 drone crashed in Iran, it would mark a significant setback for the US, that has lost less-sophisticated unmanned aircraft in recent years over Iran, but an almost intact RQ-170 could be a windfall of useful intelligence for the Iranians and their allies.

Good luck reverse engineering it. By the time they do our next generation drones will make that one look like an Edsel.

The parts for the drone were probably made in China or India. I would bet there's a little malicious code in their programming.

That or someone's figured out how to put a virus on those things wirelessly...

Mindless nationalistic statement by Serial Worrier. The Iranians are neither technologically backward nor friendless.

Colossal Contrarian is correct, defense contractors buy from India and China and put the savings in their own pockets.

Because the US can't seem to mind our own business China will now have access to a pretty decent example of our stealth technology.

The thing most interesting to me is they claim to have electronically highjacked the drone. Pretty big fail if true.

Yep, and this is the most damning response.

''We have no indication that it was brought down by hostile fire,'' a Pentagon official said.

Imagine if they turned that thing around!

We aren't dealing with idiots as the MSM and Imperialists would have you believe. This goes down with the missile launched off the coast of San Diego.

Or.... China changes the target from Iran to.... Yep, muscles and brawn don't have sh!t on brains. I think it's time to tread lightly but I doubt the teenagers in Washington are sober enough to realize how dangerous it is to go 100mph in their jeep through a snowy curvy neighborhood....

Wasn't there an article a few months ago about a computer virus inflecting systems including drones but it wasn't thought to cause any problems? Anyone remember that?

Why would China attack their #1 export customer? BTW, China and American have already agreed to divy up the Iranian fossil fuels booty. It's a done deal done in a star chamber.

Air crashes are not known for there intact fuselages. There is little to worry about this in terms of Iran. They  have a very poor aviation industry so wont be creating the exotic materials and shapes needed for stealth.

The Russians, Chinese and Indians might pay good money for a look at to see the frequencies it recieves orders on, the kind of intellegence gathering equipment it has and to have a poke at possible valnrabilities.

Yes they are.

They are that backward they were using Iraqi Il 76s as air transport because the radars had broken. They imort 40% of their refined oil products. For a major oil producer that is pretty damned backward.

I'm surprised the drone doesnt have a suicide command, you think they would be able to access it remotely and make it blow up in case something like this happened.
