THE Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Thread Pt. 6

Re: THE Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Thread Pt. 5

Unread postby Tanada » Tue 20 Dec 2016, 06:45:07

Week beginning on December 11, 2016: 404.93 ppm
Weekly value from 1 year ago: 402.38 ppm
Weekly value from 10 years ago: 381.54 ppm
I should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write, balance accounts, build a wall, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Just a quick not to remark on the latest numbers. I am personally somewhat surprised at how long we have held weekly numbers under 405 ppmv. We have been flirting with a number over 404.99 ppmv for about six weeks now, reminiscent of the pauses we were experiencing from mid January through late February in 2013 and 2014.

@ T re co2 numbers........has ( or did ) a relatively mild autumn in the northern hemisphere maintain plant growth for longer ?

I realize some areas have been cold ...parts of Russia for example...but Canada seems to have mild weather until recently .....Hudson Bay being late to freeze up.....

Your guess is as good as mine, but warmer than average weather in North America was offset to some degree by colder than average temperatures elsewhere. That should at least in theory bring a balanced reaction where any increased uptake here was counter acted by a decreased uptake rate in the places where cold was more intense than average.

thanks T.....and thanks for your ongoing effort monitoring the CO2 levels

are you expecting/ having a white Christmas ?

we are expecting 15 degrees C high on Christmas Day with a mix of sun and possible showers.....Boxing Day is supposed to be fine and 21 degrees C.....could be a good BBQ day and swimming / sunbathing at the beaches

I will add my thanks to T, and my well wishes to all.

It is supposed to be raining on Christmas Day here in Minnesota...don't remember that ever happening before.

At the moment I have six inches of snow on the ground but it is 2 C outside and things are melting, tomorrow is supposed to hit 4 C then 5 on Christmas Day followed by 12 C and rain on the 26th.

Very unusual weather, December daytime high averages 2 C, January averages 0 C and February averages 2 C. There are always outliers of course, that's the thing about weather. The warmest day so far for December 2016 was 5 C on the 1st and 2nd. The coldest day so far was -11 C on the 15th. On the other side of the coin the record high for the 26th is 18 C so there is no danger of the record for that date falling this year. On the gripping hand and just for completeness the record low for the 15th is a rock solid -29 C.

So the weather shall be unusual, but not unprecedented.

The problem is very obvious. The numbers are relentless in their increase.

It was about 300 when I was born in 1954.

So the next generation will be eyeing 500 ppm, no doubt (if they make it that far).

@ jedrider.....if you stick around for another 15 -20 years you will probably see 500 ppm for yourself

Looks like we will finish out the year still just below 405 ppmv for the weekly averages. Still don't understand why. I know it is just a number and not crucial important. It just bugs me when these weeks long stalls take place, which seem to happen more frequently the higher the overall CO2 level becomes.

December 29: 405.27 ppm
December 28: 404.42 ppm
December 27: 404.53 ppm
December 26: 404.56 ppm
December 25: 404.70 ppm

January seems to have broken the pause, two days over 460 ppmv in the first four days.

January 04: 405.20 ppm
January 03: 405.46 ppm
January 02: 406.84 ppm
January 01: 406.36 ppm

December 31: 405.08 ppm

Thanks again, T.

So weird to see those year-old levels already above 400. The shock isn't over for me, at least.

@ t .....in the southern hemisphere we are past the peak of spring growth , all the trees are now in full leaf, grass growth and crop growth is slowing down.....at least that's the case in the southern states of Australia and across NZ....and I assume the same applies in the southern countries of South America ...Argentina , Uruguay , Chile , Paraguay and the southern states of Brazil.....as well as South Africa

Whereas in the NH i'm assuming dead plant matter is rotting down and releasing CO2
