And yet I see none of these people volunteering to solve the problem by exiting out on their own. Including the OP.

Here Cog, we totally agree. Unless, you have a humane solution, Keep it to yourself. Oh and rich person, we also ave way too much frivolous consumption going on. Of which the super rich lifestyles are the most egregious examples of 8O

Where does one gain the moral authority to declare what is frivolous and what is not. Is a gas powered leaf blower frivolous? What about a yacht? Is it frivolous to set your thermostat at 72 but setting it at 68 honorable and just?

Whenever discussions arise discussing how other people live their lives and what they consume, I'm always puzzled on where the moral authority comes from to cast those judgments.

It is not about Moral authority. It is about common sense. To just survive and get by, you do NOT need to live with so many amenities and in the manner, we in rich countries live. This is not some radical observation. Basic necessities are just that basic. Beyond that is superfluous and yes frivolous as it goes beyound BASIC.

You also don't need to spit out kids like the Duggars either.

There is no solution, at least any humanity will embrace.

We are going to experience he foo on effects of overshoot.

You MA be and to mitigate some of the effects on a personal basis, maybe not.

That does not mean the problem does not exist

So what 'frivolities' have you eliminated from your life onlooker? Is your thermostat set at 62 all winter and you keep the A/C off all summer because people in your area can easily survive without A/C baring an extended heat wave lasting a month or more? Do you walk/bike/ride a moped to work or telecommute? Do you eat only locally grown foods instead of drinking OJ for breakfast and having wheat bread grown in North Dakota and California Strawberries all year long?

I am not making accusations, I am genuinely curious.

Thanks for the genuine curiosity T. Well lets see I live in upstate NY. I still do some freelance translation work on the computer. I do NOT own a car. I try to eat local food especially produce. I do not take any airflights and have not since years ago. I also happen to be in large credit card debt. My bad. I live with my girlfriend who is disabled and we rent a low rent apartment. So, yes I am not a paragon of off grid low carbon footprint living but neither am I a hyper consumer oriented person. I nevertheless, hope that we all together in rich countries dismantle IF POSSIBLE this hyper consumer oriented society towards a more frugal one. If that is hypocrisy then so be it.

Prince Willie's pronouncements from one of his castles will make as little difference as his father's, his grandfather's, or Al Gore's. As Newfie touches on, the rich make up for having few children by illustrious consumption while the poor make up for material insecurity by pumping out the children. Nothing anyone says makes any difference. The alternative is to go the Scandinavian route, impose very high taxes & provide reasonable living standards to all. This only alternative is never going to wash in the Americas, Asia, Africa, so it's not going to have a global impact.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you on record wringing your hands over the world debt situation?

Precisely, and I have personal experience to inform me how insidious debt is especially at the usury rates CC charge.

Nobody forced your hand to swipe the plastic. I wonder whether you're pining for doom just so you won't have to pay off your debts?

There you go. So if anybody here ever wishes to find me I will either be in Debt prison or in some Transitional Community trying to survive after the Collapse but without any debts owed
