That particular issue aside, can anyone think of a major government program that was successfully dismantled, reduced, or eliminated?

What you guys need is a good dose of realism...is any politician black or white going to deliver....not on your nelly. Jesus runs America..........from Wall Street.
Is he 'black'?
He's probably closer to Europe than Africa![]()
But lets be blunt here. This fellow has freshly taken up residence as caretaker in a house with its roof on fire and the owner occupants in severe, most likely paranoid denial. WTF is he supposed to do?
Thats what I'ld love to know!
He can quit lying about 90% of Mexico's assault weapons coming arcoss the US borders.
Fully Automatic weapons are illegal in this Country.
I caught him on this deceitful statement.

Cut wasteful programs does sound like cutting jobs, but not necessarily; it could be cutting billion in R&D for the next class of boomer nuclear subs, or for that matter, the ICBMs they carry. It could be closing any of the 700+ military installations abroad, and using those good Americans to patrol our borders. Etc, etc.Repent wrote:Omama in a desperate attempt to confront a historic and unprecidented deficit has named a fiscal officer to cut wasteful government programs.
Our economy is a big Ponzi scheme; it's entirely predicated on consumption and growth. The "good times" were a chapter in Fantasy Island, that now many --myself included-- are beginning to understand.Repent wrote:In good economic times this would have been considered long overdue, and this would be great news!
Indeed.Repent wrote:Hard to see that this crisis is ending or that a recovery is well under way.

Yes, exactly! Teachers and a wide assortment of local and state workers around these parts are getting laid off. State and local public workers, such as teachers and what-not will likely decrease in number, but the number of federal government workers will likely increase.
This thread is about federal government employees getting laid off... and we see no sign of that at all.

Well, since at least one person in a two parent household is currently unemployed, we really don't need Public Education anymore. The only reason you have Public Schools at all is as a Warehouse for kids so their parents can work. So you can certainly expect teaching positions in the public schools to be cut. The unemployed parents can Homeschool of course.
Police and Firefighters are a more difficult problem. Cut these positions too much while at the same time crime is bound to increase and you'll quickly end up with social anarchy. With that comes decreasing Tax revenue to the federal goobermint, but so long as they can keep printing money and people take it this isn't a problem, effectively the FG just makes Police and Firefighters part of the Federal Goobermint.
Clearly, the private sector has failed spectacularly here, so obviously if anyone is going to be employed at all its going to have to come from Goobermint. Still waiting for the New WPA from Obama. Currently he is just following the Banksters advice to shovel funny money at them on the theory that will create new jobs in the private sector. That's working...NOT. Exploding Job Losses
In one form or another here now, EVERYONE is already a Goobermint worker. In some form or another, your industry is getting subsidized by Obamout Toilet Paper. In my case, because Alaska is funded in large part by the US Military and they are being paid with Toilet Paper, that Toilet Paper filters down to me in the local economy. If you truly stopped the Fed from Printing and the US Treasury from issuing more Irredeemable debt, about INSTANTLY the military would collapse and so would in fact every last department of the US Goobermint, because the US Goobermint is Bankrupt. There aren't enough tax receipts to even pay for daily operations. This of course is WHY the Fedral Deficit is ballooning at a geometric pace here, has nothing to do with Obama at all really, despite what Planty spins in his propaganda. Same thing would have happenned under anybody else, McCain or even Ron Paul, though it would have been interesting to see the results of simply letting the whole structure collapse instantaneously if Ron Paul had followed thru with those ideas.
Anyhow, yes as long as the US Goobermint exists and is in control of a currency system that works, they are going to be the Employer of last resort here. At least at the moment they have an infinitely deep pocket to keep writing paychecks to all their workers. The only Big Companies surviving here are those which in some way are getting Obamout Toilet Paper. Small companies are still surviving by servicing the Big Company Employees (the US Goobermint Military for instance) and sieving off some Toilet Paper this way.
The economy is becoming Socialist by default here, LITERAL default in the monetary sense. Its more a Fascist solution at the moment than a Communist one, but either way its Socialism of a form. Its going to be interesting how long they can keep it running on Toilet Paper.

I agree with this part. Strongly. I didn't know you read Quinn, RE.
It's nearly time for us to acknowledge that the twelve years of "school" we put kids through has become little more than torture in any case, and the end result is a bunch of young adults who know how to pass a standardized test but can barely think at all when it comes to anything requiring initiative or creativity. But that's probably a discussion for another thread.

Anyhow, I haven't read any material about the public school problems, what I write comes from observations over the years as a teacher. I've written about this before on these pages, though I can't remember the thread it was in. At any rate, if you start a thread on the subject I'll participate, or should I start one?

The Quinn some of us talk about is Daniel.
