Miami, Florida

Miami seems to be the epicenter of stupid these days. So I thought I’d start anthread to talk about or track how they are doing.

The impetus for this has been a couple of recent stories about Miami development.

They are building a huge destination mall in a low lying region.

Their is a new luxury residential skyscraper going up, 700’ tall, 85 units, starting at $4.5 million.

There is a twisted logic to this development. If they stop growing the tax base will shrink and there will be no one to pay for the SLR effects.

Well serendipity, look what I found guys.

South Florida is the organized fraud capital of America

Now it is no big leap to envision this huge real estate bubble building even AFTER the Feds and even Insurance Industry decide to abandon this area. Then when a doozy of a Hurricane hits, people finally realize this is a forlorn area too late

No, just a brain fart. I had a tough day, on the phone with the Medicare rectums.

Vienna,,,,, uh, Venice is built over very different substrata allowing at least some control over rising and falling sea levels. Miami's porous foundations and layout won't allow that type of control at all. Useless comparison.

Yes Venice has built three big flood gates, several billion bucks. Also the Lido is higher than Miami Beach making a better natural dam.

However both suffer from subsidence.

It seems to me I've seen documentaries on SLR in both Venice and Miami (or at least a South Florida city), and what they were doing about it.

Big gates for Venice. Supposed to buy them some time for the unusual tidal events / storms. It showed how shops were being inundated with water at the highest tides, and how, for example, book stores were adapting by using bathtubs to protect the books near the floor.

For southern Florida, a mayor or governor was talking about doing LOTS of pumping to manage the SLR, and how low lying streets were getting flooded during the highest tides.

It seems to me that both documentaries made clear, via the politicians interviewed, that the money they were spending was only buying them X decades (hopefully). The implication seemed to be that longer term, the problem would be obvious to everyone and then (magically?) enough money would be made available to "solve" the problem.

Well, good luck with that plan, but by then, MANY coastal areas will have similar problems.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

IIRC the multi-billion dollar Venice gates provide 1 meter of protection.
