Space elevator in 15 years predictions pop up every decade, about half the frequency of the "we have 5 years to fix climate change or we're doomed" predictions.

And...talk about inequity...

Here's an excellent long-read on the current state of mid-Appalachian coal country, and how it came to be that way.

The 100-year capitalist experiment that keeps Appalachia poor, sick, and stuck on coal

That's quite the read, Dohboi. Thanks. I used to do some contract work in W.Va. coal country and what I saw there was one thing that led me to going off grid. The one thing I could do was to minimize my use of coal, for a lot of reasons. I once had to make an equipment delivery to Charleston and I-64 was closed due to a bad accident, so I hit the old highways trying to get around the mess. What I saw (besides old highways and bridges in simply awful condition) was mile after mile of coal-field squaller, largely abandoned towns, and horrific mountaintop removal. And Trump promises to to make that part of America great again:

It turns out, Trump’s campaign promises weren’t just talk. In August, the Trump administration halted a comprehensive study, launched by the National Academy of Sciences in early 2017, to assess the health effects of mountaintop removal, citing cost concerns. Meanwhile, Trump appointed as head of the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration a former CEO of a coal company with a record of repeated safety violations, including at a mine where a preventable accident killed a miner in 2011. His energy department is investigating ways to force utility companies to subsidize coal company profits, reported Slate in Oct. 2017.

It's like District 12 up there. Really 'great'. Anyone traveling that area should get off the interstates and see what their electric bills and tax dollars are paying for. Or just see it from space: https://www.google.com/maps/@37.9678123 ... a=!3m1!1e3

Thanks for the fix, T, and for the great, if horrific, story, GH.

The difference is that we now have composite alloys and carbon fiber cabling to actually meet the required specs. I'm not saying this will happen in the next century, but I believe it will sometime after that. I'm a person who remembers propeller driven airliners, and the wonder of the Boeing 707 in an age when most Middle Class people travelled on railroads, before the interstate highway system was built.

And while we're on subject, inequality obviously has many other...downsides:

Inequality drives murder

Inequality predicts homicide rates “better than any other variable”, says Martin Daly, professor emeritus of psychology and neuroscience at McMaster University in Ontario ...

Oh? Why are you still driving an ICE vehicle then?

I can't remember which wise green said it, but, "The most ecological car is the car you own (or none at all)."

Given the built in ecological cost of both ICE and EV cars, rushing out to buy one instead of making whatever car you have last as long as ever you can is a bad eco-decision (in most cases).
