2017 Dramatic miss harvest in West Europe expected

Don't fear, here in Ohio the wheat harvest has been under weigh for about a week and is going flat out to get it all in.
I should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, design a building, write, balance accounts, build a wall, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, pitch manure, program a computer, cook, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Never fear, with record rainfall, full reservoirs, and deep snowfall that will last through the Summer, California will be generating a bumper crop of vegetables, fruits, nuts, dairy, beef, and wine.

Developing world drought threat to EU rice and cotton intensifies research efforts
12 July 2017

Image

A Europe-wide research effort is ramping up efforts to understand the risk to EU food supplies from climate change, after a report revealed that common staples are under threat from water scarcity and drought in the developing world.

The report, entitled Vulnerabilities of Europe’s economy to global water scarcity and drought revealed that supplies of animal feed, rice, cotton, grapes and even pistachios could be impacted in the near future as they come from regions that have a shortage of water.....

‘Can you imagine the chocolate industry without cocoa.’

Dr Ertug Ercin, Water Footprint Network, the Netherlands

Shocking

Dr Ertug Ercin, the lead author of the report, said that they were surprised when they realised just how vulnerable some of Europe’s food products were....

EU lifts corn import forecast for 2017-18 to record high
in Freight News 31/07/2017

The strong start to 2017-18 for European Union corn imports looks set to continue, with officials lifting their forecast for the bloc’s buy-ins to a record high, thanks to weakened prospects for domestic output.
The European Commission hiked by more than 3.0m tonnes, to 15.3m tonnes, its forecast for EU corn imports this season, on a July-to-June basis.
The upgrade would take imports well above the 12.9m tonnes imported last season – lifting them indeed above the 15.09m tonnes recorded in 2007-08, the current record high.

Could the EU feed all this new and old people by its own fields?

The correct answer is NO so lets hope US + RUS and Ukraine could ever deliver ....

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... at-harvest
Total output for the 28-nation trading bloc will rise 3.8 percent to 141 million metric tons in the season that started in July, compared with an 11 percent slump the previous year, according to consultancy Strategie Grains. That’s still below the 151.9 million tons collected two years earlier.

“Contrast is a good word," Strategie Grains President Andree Defois said in an interview. "The total effect is a higher crop, with good quality and better volume in France but some reduction in volume in central EU and quality problems in northern EU.”

Great year for the potatoes at least. Also, pretty big year for wheat after a bad year in 2016. Yeah, Not good for fruits though, but not everywhere. Everything went good for corn finally.

I was suprised with the title of this topic. There's no fuss in Europe about a bad year. Of course, we know since april that it was gonna be a bad year for grapes and wine.

Our dry land winter wheat harvest, in Eastern Oregon, was another record. Also, our soil moisture level was the highest ever recorded over the last Five Generations. So next year should also be good. :) Now, if the price would rise........
