Press release on Turkish airstrikes against Iraq and Syria

867-26-04-2017

en-GB1 ru-RU1
Reports coming in say that the Turkish air force carried out airstrikes on the night of April 25 against Iraqi and Syrian regions bordering Turkey. Turkey has stated that the air strikes targeted positions held by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Syrian Democratic Forces headed by the Democratic Union Party, close to the PKK. They report around 70 Kurdish fighters dead.

Moscow is deeply concerned by these actions. The Turkish military has acted here against the Kurdish forces that are genuinely combating terrorist groups, above all ISIS, on the ground. At a time when the war on terror in Iraq and Syria is far from over, these actions clearly do not help to consolidate counterterrorism efforts and aggravate an already tense situation.

We are also concerned over the fact that the Turkish airstrikes were carried out against sovereign states’ territory, bypassing these states’ legitimate governments. We consider such actions unacceptable and in breach of the basic principles of relations between states.

In this situation, we call on all parties to show restraint. It is important to show the needed political foresight and focus our attention on the most important task today – combating the terrorist international in the form of ISIS, al-Nusra and other affiliated groups.

Interesting perspective over time. From 1999:

"Given its role as Turkey's principal arms supplier, the United States has enormous potential leverage over Turkish behavior on critical issues such as respect for human rights and the pursuit of negotiated settlements to the 15-year civil war with the PKK and the 25-year old division of Cyprus. The time to use this leverage is now. In a "political aftershock" prompted by the government's handling of the earthquake, the Turkish media and non-governmental organizations have stepped up demands for fundamental reforms such as the revision of Turkey's military-dominated constitution."

And then this report from last summer:

"The US political system is a global arms distribution system of the first order. In this context, the Obama administration has proven itself a good friend to arms exporting firms. The Obama administration has approved more than $278 billion in foreign arms sales in its eight years, more than double the total of the previous administration. Team Obama has loosened restrictions on arms exports, making it possible to send abroad a whole new range of weapons and weapons components."

But President Obama wasn't a big provider to Turkey. Hence Russia saw an opening to enhance ties to Turkey by helping it to modernize its military. Including the potential sale of a state of the art defensive missile system.

Huge rebel convoy heads towards Kurdish border town as Turkey gears up for offensive
By Chris Tomson - 28/04/2017

The Turkish Armed Forces have reportedly drawn up plans to capture the Kurdish-held town of Tall Abyad and bring it under rebel control in a cross-border offensive comparable to the Euphrates Shield offensive last year.

Amateur footage emerged on Thursday, purportedly showing a large rebel convoy driving towards the Kurdish border town from the Jarabulus pocket through Turkish territory.

Turkish-led attack on Kurdish-held town in northern Aleppo results in heavy casualties
By Chris Tomson - 08/05/2017
Image
DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:30 P.M.) – On Sunday evening, fierce firefights erupted in rural Aleppo as Turkish-backed rebels began an assault on the town of Sheikh Issa, engaging with Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

With clashes persisting until 4 in the morning, the SDF managed to hold their ground and kill all hostile fighters of Ahrar Al-Sham and Turkmen units of the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The Turkish Armed Forces were not directly involved in the attack but reportedly shelled SDF positions at Sheikh Issa from rearguard positions.

A Kurdish military source said “dozens” of Turkish-backed militants were left dead on the battlefield although the exact number could not be specified as the fallen rebel fighters were in a no man’s zone between Marea and Sheikh Issa.

The women of Kurdistan have already earned international acclaim by playing a frontline role in the fight against Isis in northern Syria, driving the militants off their land.

Now a number of Kurdish women are going a step further, creating their own all-female commune designed to wipe away the stain of war and patriarchal sin.

The project is called the Jinwar Free Women's Village Rojava and it is situated near the city of Dirbesiye on the Turkish-Syrian border. It was first announced last year, with the explicit aim of providing a refuge for women, free from violence and conflict. The first mud shelters, built for maximum ecological value, were built earlier this year - naturally, the builders were women.

Turkish troops arrive at northern Aleppo to fight Kurds
By Zen Adra - 21/06/2017
Image
Turkish Special Forces arrived, today, at northern Aleppo countryside to shore up its proxies in what might be a new crackdown against the Kurdish forces.

The reinforcements – greatly welcomed by local residents – were deployed to help the Turkish-backed Euphrates Shield – a coalition of FSA-affiliated factions – expel the Kurdish fighters from Tal Rifaat and other nearby towns as battles between the two warring parties re-erupted recently.

Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has vowed to use force to drive out the Kurds from the towns and villages they had seized earlier, accusing them of ethnic cleansing against the indigenous Arab inhabitants.

Hundreds of militants who have defected from the Islamic State have crossed the borders to southern Turkey as a first step to return to their countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. 8O  :?

Local sources reported dozens of the former ultraconservative militants now rallying in several towns and villages in southern Turkey after making it through the borders.

The same sources confirmed that 4 Saudi extremist militants have arrived at a little village in southern Turkey after paying $2000 each to smugglers.

Throughout the year, the Turkish border guards have shot dead scores – both civilians and fighters – while trying to cross the borders into Turkey.

The massive escape comes as the self-proclaimed Islamic State is increasingly losing more grounds to the Syrian Army and allied forces in central and Eastern Syria.....

Iraq: Thousands of Kurds rally for independence ahead of upcoming referendum
By News Desk - 14/09/2017

Image

Thousands of Kurds rallied in favour of independence in the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil, Wednesday, ahead of an upcoming referendum on Kurdish independence from Iraq on September 25.

Protesters dressed in Kurdish clothing played and sang traditional native songs during the rally. Many waved the flag of Kurdistan to show their support for an autonomous Kurdistan.

The historic referendum is set to take place on September 25, however the Iraqi parliament has rejected the plans and has authorised a resolution that allows Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to take measures to preserve the country’s existing borders.

The Kurdish population have been pushing for independence in a historical process dating back to the aftermath of World War Two, during which time Kurdish-populated regions were split between different countries as Middle Eastern borders were redrawn.....

Turkey, Iran furious over Kirkuk’s participation in independence referendum

Iran joined warnings issued by Turkey over plans by the local administration of the Iraqi province of Kirkuk to take part in next month’s Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) independence referendum, saying it is “wrong, provocative and unacceptable.”

On Aug. 30, Tehran said “the Kirkuk council’s decision to take part in the Kurdistan region’s referendum is wrong, provocative and unacceptable.”

War drums on!

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-iran ... BZ09S?il=0

Tehran and Ankara fear the spread of separatism to their own Kurds. Iran also supports Shi‘ite groups who have been ruling or holding key security and government positions in Iraq since the 2003 U.S-led invasion which toppled Saddam Hussein.

Turkey, meanwhile, said on Sunday its aircraft launched strikes against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) targets in northern Iraq’s Gara region on Saturday after spotting militants preparing to attack Turkish military outposts on the border.

”Turkey will never ever tolerate any status change or any new formations on its southern borders,“ Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said. ”The KRG will be primarily responsible for the probable developments after this referendum.

The KRG has resisted calls to delay the referendum by the United Nations, the United States and Britain who fear it could further destabilize the region.....

http://in.reuters.com/article/mideast-c ... BZ0D1?il=0

http://oilprice.com/Geopolitics/Interna ... istan.html

Ankara and Tehran seem to be preparing a combined military strategy to quell any Kurdish independence gains. However, these allies may have overlooked the changing position that Russia, Iran’s main ally in Syria, is currently taking inside the Kurdish movement.

Growing business links between Moscow and Erbil, such as the major deal just signed by Rosneft to build a vast gas export pipeline in Kurdistan, show that Moscow is once again playing a Russian roulette version of the Middle East chess game. Growing cooperation between the Kurdish government, led by the KDP, President Masoud Barzani, and Putin’s associates, could put the Kurds in a better position to achieve and maintain independence.

The West, represented by the U.S. and its European partners, plays a disputed and fledgling role. After promoting and supporting the de-facto Kurdish independent state after the removal of Saddam Hussein, while arming them during their battles against Daesh/IS and Al Qaeda, Western governments show a lack of stamina and political influence.

The already-weak position Western countries presently have in the Middle East is particularly apparent now. Washington, London, Brussels and Paris haven’t been willing to support the democratic moves made in Erbil, while also ignoring the growing instability and security issues confronting the Kurds in their home regions. From Washington and Europe, the Kurdish state shouldn’t expect a message of love.

Iraqi Kurds must give up on independence or go hungry - Erdogan

Turkey's president has said Iraqi Kurds could go hungry as a result of the punitive measures it is considering after Monday's independence referendum.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the head of the Kurdistan Regional Government of "treachery" for pressing ahead with the vote despite international opposition.
Massoud Barzani should now "give up on this adventure", he said.
Mr Erdogan has previously threatened to cut a vital Kurdish oil pipeline and stop lorries crossing Turkey's border.
Turkey fears that the emergence of an independent Kurdish state on its border will stoke separatist feeling in its own Kurdish minority.
The results of the referendum are yet to be declared, but a "yes" vote is expected.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday warned the Iraqi Kurdistan region against pushing for independence after holding a non-binding referendum, saying it risked sparking an “ethnic war” in the region.

In his latest barrage of warnings to Iraqi Kurdish leader Massud Barzani, Erdogan even warned that his region risked going short on food and clothing if Turkish sanctions were applied.
