Global Oil Chokepoints and the New Silk Road for Energy
The map is obviously out of date.
...
But of all the charts I found, this one most clearly shows you how trade can literally, physically, be choked off.Image
Meanwhile, in the strategic picture, you can see exactly what China is trying to do. It’s building a land bridge through Myanmar. That bridge bypasses the Strait of Malacca, currently patrolled and controlled by the US Navy’s 7th fleet. It also connects China directly with off-shore gas fields in the Bay of Bengal…and further east… all the way to the developing oil and gas provinces off the coast of East Africa.

It’s a new kind of Silk Road, but built for energy.Image

Unlike Americans and Europeans the Chinese take the long view. This gives them an advantage so large it is hard to envision the total scope of it.

You don't believe the US takes the long view? Why else have we encircled the ME and Russia with dozens of military bases. We want their oil.

That isn't the long view, that is the short view. China paid to expand the Panama Canal which gave them a double benefit, they can now import Canadian oil piped to Texas by good ole America and they can easily import whatever portion of Venezuelan production their refineries are equipped to process. Being good buddy social communists they even get the socialist fraternal discount on that VZ oil.

They also got America to rescind the restriction on exporting oil so if they choose to outbid American refineries they can even load up that light tight Permian oil from Texas and haul it off to China through their expanded canal.

That is thinking long term. The middle east is the old news, and most of the countries there are running headlong into the export land model.

Sub - "...they {China} can now import Canadian oil piped to Texas by good ole America". Just as they can import good ole oil produced in Texas. Just the rest of the world was able to import oil produced in the US since there WAS NEVER AN EXPORT BAN. From the day the "export ban" became law the US has exported over 1.5 BILLION BBLS OF OIL produced in the country. In fact, in 2015, the year immediately BEFORE President Obama "rescinded" the so called export ban the US exported 170 MILLION BBLS OF OIL.

Easy enough to prove the US govt has never enforced a ban on exporting US oil: the same US govt provides the proof:

https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafH ... rexus2&f=a

And of that 170 MILLION BBLS of oil exported in 2015 from the US it wasn't Canadian oil re-exported to China. It was 156 MILLION BBLS of US produced oil exported to Canada. And once more the proof provided by the US govt:

https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafH ... rexca1&f=a

Additionally it was primarily light condensate mostly from the Eagle Ford Shale production in S Texas. Some went to eastern Canadian refineries to blend with heavy oil imports and the rest (about 350,000 bbls/day) to Alberta to blend with the oil sands production. That 12° API oil blended with the US condensate created 23° API "dilbit" that could be pumped via pipelines to the US. Typically the dilbit would be diluted with more condensate to produce the 31° API required by the refineries.

Still amazes the Rockman how many folks (some who are really smart) still accept the 100% bullsh*t propaganda tossed out about the export of US oil.
