Knowing a bit about the history of the region I've always thought the thread title a bit off. The armed conflict between the Kurds and Turkey officially began some time ago. From wiki:

The Kurdish–Turkish conflict is an armed conflict between the Republic of Turkey and various Kurdish insurgent groups, which have demanded separation from Turkey to create an independent Kurdistan, or to have autonomy and greater political and cultural rights for Kurds inside the Republic of Turkey. The main rebel group is the Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK (Kurdish: Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan). Although insurgents have carried out attacks in many regions of Turkey, the insurgency is mainly in southeastern Turkey. The PKK's presence in Iraq's Kurdistan Region, from which it also launched attacks, has resulted in the Turkish military carrying out frequent ground incursions and air and artillery strikes in the region. The conflict has cost the economy of Turkey an estimated 300 to 450 billion dollars, mostly military costs. It has also affected tourism in Turkey.

Since the PKK was founded on 27 November 1978, it has been involved in armed clashes with Turkish security forces. The full-scale insurgency, however, did not begin until 15 August 1984, when the PKK announced a Kurdish uprising. The first insurgency lasted until 1 September 1999, when the PKK declared a unilateral ceasefire. The armed conflict was later resumed on 1 June 2004, when the PKK declared an end to its ceasefire. Since summer 2011, the conflict has become increasingly violent with resumption of large-scale hostilities. In 2013 the Turkish Government and the jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan started talks. On 21 March 2013, Öcalan announced the "end of armed struggle" and a ceasefire with peace talks. On July 25, 2015, the PKK finally cancelled their 2013 ceasefire after a year of tension due to various events, including the Turks bombing PKK positions in Iraq, in the midst of the Kurds' battle against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Kurds urge Trump to establish ‘safe zones’ in northern Syria
https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/ku ... ern-syria/
BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:26 P.M.) – Over 150,000 IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) have arrived in Manbij recently, said Shervan Derwish, Kurdish official spokesperson for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), suggesting that the areas under SDF control could become safe zones that US President Donald Trump has called for, ARA News reported.

“During this month, over 150k IDPs reached Manbij area, coming from Deir Hafer and al-Khafsah, proving our area as a safe zone for Syrian civilians,” Darwish said.

“The protection of displaced people and refugees is our moral and humanitarian obligation, and we will give them all support needed,” he added.

“If there is a project for no-fly-zones in Syria, all conditions are possible in the areas under the SDF control,” he suggested....

As I've read more there are some parallels with the Texas revolution against the Mexican govt. The "Texicans" were not all Mexican citizens and thus had no rights. One big reason the Mexican govt established the territory was to provide a buffer between Mexico and the native American tribes. Since Mexico had little to no control over the region they gave up little by allowing the Texicans to earn land there. Kinda similar to the buffer the Kurds provide between the Syrians and Turks. Of course the Turks didn't care for the Kurds "stealing" some of its lands anymore then the native Americans cared for the Texicans stealing theirs.

Eventually the Mexican govt could no longer tolerate the independent attitude of the Texicans...just as the Turks feel about Kurdish "independence". So in both cases the situation might be resolved by killing those seeking autonomy. The Mexican govt came close but lost it all at San Jacinto...a few miles from where I type. I see the Texas monument (intentionally built a tad taller then the Washington Monument) every time I drive into Houston.

Interesting that the Kurds are trying to put out a bigger umbrella that includes non-Kurds. The original Texicans included many Mexican citizens fighting for the same independence from Mexico City. Lots of cities and streets in Texas commemorating those Mexicans.

Now we'll see if the Kurds have their own "Alamo" (or Goliad. Yes: the complete cry was "Remember the Alamo...remember Goliad!) where they are slaughtered by Turks and/or Syrians. And if they also have a similar victory at their "San Jacinto" final battle field. A Texas victorious battle that took all of 18 minutes to beat General Santa Anna's army and forcing him to surrender to the Texican army.

BTW though denied at the time the US govt did provide the Texicans with some support. Hmm, the US govt providing some support to the Kurds? There's a novel idea. LOL.

Shouldn't we finish up our work "helping" the Afghanis and the Iraqis and the Libyans establish their democracies before we take on another commitment to help the Kurds? 8O

Cheers!

"Shouldn't we finish up our work "helping" the Afghanis and the Iraqis and the Libyans..." No, all lost causes IMHO. We could use one strong ally in the region and the Kurds seem the most likely. Same reason we should have went into S Vietnam in the 60's. Except we should have helped drive the French out. LOL. But yes, seriously.

S - As someone once offered: have 3 all women battalions. Being housed together eventually their "monthly cycles" would sync. That way one would always be dealing with PMS: a truly frightening rapid response unit. LOL.

.
some more headache for the US ,
Turkey is shelling the YPG ( Syrian kurds) while the US is relying on them to do the ground fighting around Raqqah and al thawrah were thing were rather going well ,
as Cog mentioned the kurds are about the only ones worth a dime as fighters , now they are reassessing their options
the Kurds are the yellow tags

sparky - Got a lot more serious yesterday. The Turks only gave the US forces working with those Kurds a one hour notice before attacking the unit. Killed 20 Kurds and no US casualties. First time the Turks inflict casualties on our troops it will be interesting to see President Trump reaction. Especially with the Turks trying to make nice with Putin. I would hope this close call warrants a serious phone call from someone high up the chain of command.
