Heat Waves 2017

Thanks to sig at neven's site for this one:

The record warmth this winter, then a sudden hard freeze last week, has caused crop losses aporoaching a billion dollars in South Carolina and Georgia alone. Severe weather is forecast for later this week.

Widespread damage from Southeast freeze

At least 90 percent of the peach crop in South Carolina (the nation’s top peach producer behind California, with a typical crop value of $90 million) was wiped out by freezing temperatures late last week, according to the state’s agriculture commissioner. The state’s wheat and corn fields also suffered heavy damage, reported WISTV. A less severe freeze in Georgia may have ruined anywhere from 25 to 75 percent of that state’s peach crop. Blueberries across the Southeast also experienced major damage, as summarized by Louisville, KY, broadcast meteorologist John Belski. It dropped to 25°F in Gainesville, FL, on Thursday morning, the coldest reading for so late in the year in more than a century of Gainesville records. Jacksonville’s 28°F was also a record for so late in the year. Update: Total crop losses in South Carolina and Georgia could approach $1 billion, according to an AP report filed Monday afternoon.

NWS Tucson: Another record has fallen, the daily high at Tucson. We hit 93 at 12:57 pm breaking the old record of 92 set in 1997. #azwx

Heat wave forces cancellation of school sport
March 23, 2017

With the mercury rising to a sizzling 39°C in the city, a string of schools confirmed that all sporting activities had been cancelled due to the heat. Uitenhage was even hotter at 41°C. The sweltering temperatures and discomfort index levels [DCI] also soared elsewhere. Patensie and Coega hit 41°C and 39°C respectively, while DCI levels were sky high, with only two areas – Coega (98) and Plettenberg Bay (91) – falling below the 100 mark.

Climate change ... fingerprint found on global extreme weather

Global warming makes temperature patterns that cause heatwaves, droughts and floods across Europe, north America and Asia more likely, scientists find

...
The new work analysed a type of extreme weather event known to be caused by changes in “planetary waves” – such as California’s ongoing record drought, and recent heatwaves in the US and Russia, as well as severe floods in Pakistan in 2010.

Planetary waves are a pattern of winds, of which the jet stream is a part, that encircle the northern hemisphere in lines that undulate from the tropics to the poles. Normally, the whole wave moves eastwards but, under certain temperature conditions, the wave can halt its movement. This leaves whole regions under the same weather for extended periods, which can turn hot spells into heatwaves and wet weather into floods.

This type of extreme weather event is known to have increased in recent decades. But the new research used observations and climate models to show that the chances of the conditions needed to halt the planetary waves occurring are significantly more likely as a result of global warming.

“Human activity has been suspected of contributing to this pattern before, but now we uncover a clear fingerprint of human activity,” said Prof Michael Mann, at Pennsylvania State University in the US and who led the study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Canary - I don't want to be a canary...

In my part of NC we have been averaging 15-20 degrees F above normal. All thru the winter and into spring...we are about 30 days ahead of schedule. I almost turned the AC on yesterday and I have never turned it on before June 1. Average high for today is 65...predicted is 83. We left the windows open last night and will close them today...

I take some comfort in the arctic graph that shows minimal divergence in summer but if we continue the pattern we will reach 90's in June and 100's in August and September, maybe 110. I will be hiding inside with my new Mini-split heat pump and definitely not climbing on roofs :)

But my garden may not survive :(

More on the Indian situation here: https://robertscribbler.com/2017/04/21/ ... continent/

"It is a drought we have not seen in 110 years. Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and it is due to global climate change.” — S. Thirunavukkarasu, a retired Tamil Nadu Public Works official.

...For India, the hot-season-like temperatures began in late February — two months earlier than usual...

Today, life-threatening temperatures of between 100 and 115 F blanket much of this vast, densely populated land...

...Farmers across the country report a sense of deepening desperation as cries for help in the form of nationwide protests break out. Meanwhile, those working outdoors increasingly suffer from heat- and dehydration-related kidney failure. This year, conditions that threaten heat injury and loss of life have spurred schools across the country to close early.

We don't have to wait anymore, people. GW and it's dire consequences are here already, destroying lives and crops. No more need to speculate. We can sit back and watch it, with or without popcorn...that is, until it comes around and bites us directly in the butt!

...and dehydration-related kidney failure.

Yes, the mostly unrecognized aspect of global warming is the loss of surface water sources. And here in the US, aquifer depletion as well.

Water needs to be recognized as a precious, limited, shared resource. Directly contrary to current policy. Soft drink manufacturers take water from the Great Lakes for free and sell it worldwide. Big Agriculture drains the aquifers for free and again ships their products worldwide. Fracking destroys irreplaceable water resources. But for God's sake let us not stand in the way of Profit for the few. Even if it means misery and death in the long run for the many.
"For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it." - Patrick Henry

The level of injustice and wrong you endure is directly determined by how much you quietly submit to. Even to the point of extinction.

While water use and waste is a concern and a very real one the bottling and selling water from the Great Lakes is a ridiculous example. Lake Superior alone holds three quadrillion gallons of fresh water (that's 3 followed by fifteen zeros) or 425,000 gallons for each of the seven billion humans on the planet. They will run out of bottles long before they run out of water.
Now the Aural sea in Russia is a real example of water misuse.

This is entertaining...and I have popcorn :)

The weatherman today actually said "the european model shows a high today of 88, but I don't believe it". That would be 23 degrees above average. He is calling for 78.

The diff is whether or not we get rain...The first wave just passed me by with no effect. The garden is dry as a bone except for me watering. I can't wait for August...

“Never in the history of the Sindh province, had temperature risen to 50°C in the month of April,” the officials said. The officials further added that it was a clear manifestation of the extreme weather patterns to be observed after the climate change and related phenomenon.

MBS, your link didn't work, but related stories seem to be talking about 4000+ dead over a four year time period from various heat waves. But nearly all of those deaths came from only two provinces.
