Italy referendum: PM Matteo Renzi suffers heavy defeat, exit polls suggest

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38204189
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has suffered a heavy defeat in a referendum over his plan to reform the constitution, exit polls suggest.

An exit poll for state broadcaster RAI suggests 42-46% voted to back reform, compared with 54-58% voting No.

The first projection based on the vote count points to an even wider defeat: Yes at 39-43% and No at 57-61%.

Mr Renzi, who has said he would resign if he lost the vote, is due to make a statement at midnight (23:00 GMT).

The referendum was regarded as a barometer of anti-establishment sentiment in Europe.

The vote asked about plans to streamline parliament but it was widely seen as a chance to register discontent with the prime minister.

Populist parties supported a No vote.

The euro fell against the dollar immediately after the exit polls came out.

Yup. The bankers/globalists have now lost in the UK (Brexit), USA (Trump) and Italy.

I wonder what will happen in Italia after Renzi resigns----could be messy.

Cheers!

This does not bode well for the continued existence of the EU as apolitical entity. I forsee a return to the Common Market, a system that seems to have worked quite well for all the states involved.

The EEC had its faults, but was far less intrusive on the internal affairs of the member states. The Eurozone & the Euro are now at risk.

In the wake of recent Islamic terror attacks in Berlin and Turkey, Italy’s National Director of Public Safety has announced a clampdown on illegal aliens as well as an increase in deportations.

National police chief Franco Gabrielli has sent a circular letter to the country’s police departments announcing a new “zero tolerance” policy toward illegal immigrants, including intensified checks and controls as well as expulsions of foreigners without residence permits.

In the letter, Gabrielli urges “maximum attention from the different branches of law enforcement to track down foreigners in irregular situations through targeted controls.” The police chief also directs law enforcement officers to “establish immediate contact with immigration officials to expedite deportation procedures” for those found to be in the country illegally.

The circular letter underscores the importance of the crackdown “in the current context of crisis in the face of increasing migratory pressures and an international scenario characterized by instability and threats.” The grave situation imposes on law enforcement a “maximum commitment” to keep the territory “under control,” it reads.

The new hardline policy was announced on New Year’s Eve and follows on a deadly truck attack in Berlin earlier this month, when Tunisian jihadist Anis Amri drove a tractor-trailer through a Christmas market, killing twelve and injuring dozens more. Amri was later shot in a skirmish with Italian police in Milan.

New Year’s Eve is considered a particularly vulnerable time due to the large crowds that gather in towns and cities across Europe. Last year’s celebrations were marked by scores of cases of robbery and sexual assault by migrants in the center of Cologne, Germany, resulting in more than 1,000 criminal charges.

On Friday, Italy’s Minister of the Interior Marco Minniti said that the nation’s terror alert remains high, and assured Italians of a “very high security level” regarding possible terror attacks.

“We are keeping a careful watch on the terror risk, with all the agencies and resources in the field to guarantee the security of the territory,” he said.

“But this should not prevent the citizens of our country from feeling safe and celebrating the festivities in all tranquility,” he said.

In Rome, authorities have announced full deployment of law enforcement as of 7:00pm Saturday, with special attention given to national monuments such as the Roman Coliseum and the Circus Maximus, where large throngs are expected and entertainment will be offered.

I'm in Reggio di Calabria at the toe of the Italian Peninsula right now. Local TV says the Italian coast guard just picked up and brought in hundreds more Africans today

President of Apulia Michele Emiliano stops Trans Adriatic Pipeline, protects nature

Apulia, the easternmost region of Italy some sites of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, became the major obstacle to the further construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). For the record, ecologists and residents of the region's seaside towns Brindisi and Melendugno have been holding protests since 2014, drawing from the views of 40 experts who had pointed to the technical gaps in the project. According to the organization 'Comitato No TAP', the construction of the pipeline was planned through the territory of an olive grove with 231 ancient (2000+ y.o.) olive trees in it. First, the constructors were going to dig up the old trees along with the soil, lay the pipeline under them, and then plant the olives back. But experts say the ancient trees will not withstand such treatment. Apart from the ancient grove, the process of pipeline construction can do harm to other 10 thousand olive trees in the region, as well as bring damage to underwater caves, dozens of beaches and ruins of medieval castles and buildings.
The story would hardly have a happy ending but for the president of Apulia, Michele Emiliano, who supported position of local residents and ecologists and refused to issue any of construction permits to the TAP consortium. In 2016, the TAP consortium has even replaced its manager in Italy to give a boost to the negotiation process, but it didn't work. Emiliano boldly set himself against the former Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi, who in his turn has actively been lobbying for the implementation of the TAP project. After all, it came as far as in Rome they decided to limit the powers of regions getting thus an option to giving green light to large-scale construction projects without any region's consent. So, on December 4, 2016, a referendum on constitutional reform in Italy was held but fortunately for Apulia the vote failed and the region retained its ability to veto the TAP. It is worth noting that here Apulia actually deserves its opinion to be respected more than any other region does, as it is Apulia that ranks first in the country for production of wine, harvesting of olives, and it also produces 40% of all olive oil in Italy. In his resistance to the government and transnational corporations, Emiliano makes it clear to the EU leadership how necessary it is to reckon with the interests of every particular European region.
The construction of the pipeline in Apulia was planned to start in November 2016, so the TAP organizers steadily increased pressure on the Italian authorities and wanted to get Emiliano's permission by all means. For example, in early February, 2017, Lecce judge confirmed the legitimacy of the activities of the Ministry of Economic Development of Italy regarding the construction of TAP and did not investigate into the non-compliance with Seveso II directive regulations during the preparatory construction works in the area of San Foca in May 2016. Despite this, the 'Comitato No TAP' activists with Emiliano's support have called for continuation of the struggle and stressed that the pipeline designers still do not take into account the evaluation of its impact on the environment while the disregard for safety measures during the preparatory works in San Foca only emphasizes the possibility of further violations. Emiliano understands that the TAP construction along with its possible man-made effects would certainly harm the environment and the region's seaside towns' tourism image, which in its turn would dramatically affect the economic and social situation in Southern Italy. Moreover, Emiliano is obviously staying ready to provide evidences of external lobbyists' influence on the decision of the European Commission on the TAP construction, providing thus a hope to make the project completely illegal and putting an end to the works planned in Brindisi and Melendugno.
