Norto Americanos are generically referred to as Gringos! That goes for anyone with pelo rubio, and pelo rubio generally includes everything other than pelo negro. Where does Pops fit into this screenplay? And Tanada? MBS sounds like the doctor who tries to save everyone from the Big Boom. Doboi, aka Dough Boy, is the baker who takes advantage of the fire in the sky to make bread. Maybe Pops is the sedate old man who simply resigns himself to staying put on his lake, and putting on a happy face while we all die. Tanada is the rogue scientist who tries to figure out a way to lower a nuclear bomb into the earth's crust to kill the entire volcanic eruption. Ibon is already safe, tucked away in his rainforest in the clouds. He communicates with Agent R11 over ham radio. Agent R11 is the secret negotiator who tries to get people past the Panamanian Security Forces guarding the canal. We're all set. I'll be the director.

Isostatic rebound might have effected volcanic activity over the shot time frame mentioned. But Iceland is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which has been an active source of volcanic activity for hundreds of millions of years. As far as the Yellowstone caldera it has existed and periodically erupted more millions of years. The forces behind this activity originate hundreds of miles below the surface. The huge magma chamber below Yellowstone continues to be active and occasionally still causes some uplift as it periodically swells. The recent oil/NG drilling activity occurs within the first couple of miles. The amount of energy involved in such activities is grossly insignificant compared to the forces that determine events at Yellowstone.

But yes...makes great fodder for sci-fi movies.

Don't forget the forces needed to move North Dakota to somewhere 500 miles west of Yellowstone.

Some creative minds at work(?) here.

LO F'n L!

That's how us Norto Americanos phoenetically pronounce Doboi. Is that right? Roy, you say?

It doesn't matter how you pronounce it, but I think I was originally thinking about something between this: https://www.google.com/search?q=doh&cli ... 34&bih=614

And this: https://www.google.com/search?q=doughbo ... l&tbm=isch

But inevitably this guy probably comes to some folks' mind: https://www.google.com/search?q=doughbo ... l&tbm=isch

BBC: Iceland evacuates area near Bardarbunga volcano
Iceland's authorities have evacuated an area close to the country's Bardarbunga volcano over fears it could erupt.
The area, which is more than 300km (190 miles) from the capital Reykjavik, has no permanent residents but sits within a national park popular with tourists.

If some weren't aware the greatest potential danger from a sub-glacial eruption is necessarily from the volcano itself but from a flashflood: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8624748.stm

This could be quite big. If a 25km x 1km caldera develops, we will face a grim 2-3 years - world-wide.

not sure where you were for Mt St Helens...I was on a field trip very nearby and got to witness the wrath and devastation first hand. Way cool for a geologist....tres frigging scary for a citizen.

When hot gases mix with ice and snow you generally get what is called a Nuee Ardent which turns mud and soil and everything else into a ball of plastic material traveling at the speed of a Ferrari Testorosa full out with the density of ...well, I guess, mud. Don't want to be there or anywhere near it.

I remember the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. I was staying at Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, over 1100 km away, the night before it erupted and awoke later in the morning to a thick coat of ash on my car. I was driving back to Edmonton that day and my first stop was a car wash.

Iceland issues Bardarbunga volcano red alert

Unread postby dolanbaker » Sat 23 Aug 2014, 11:39:46

She's gonna blow! Jim!!
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28913165
Iceland has issued a red alert to the aviation industry for the Bardarbunga volcano, meaning significant ash emissions are likely.

The Icelandic Met Office has warned that a small sub-glacial eruption is under way at Bardarbunga.

The air space over the site has been closed, but all Icelandic airports currently remain open, authorities say.

Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, producing an ash cloud that severely disrupted air travel.

The red alert is the highest warning on the country's five-point scale.

Watch it live.

From db's excellent link above: "Melting ice could trigger bigger eruptions, says geophysicist Dr Ian Stimpson"

So, if GW melts a lot of the ice capping these volcanoes, might we see bigger and bigger eruptions to the point that the whole island-nation becomes uninhabitable?

The volcanic activity has absolutely nothing to do with GW, Iceland lies on the divergent boundary between the Eurasian plate and the North American plates. This means that there will always be some volcanic activity from time to time. Any melting ice will be a direct result of having an active volcano under it!

A historic account of the 1783 volcano: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laki#1783_eruption

If a fissure opens under the ice from mount Bardarbunga NE direction - possibly 25-50 km x 500m - we can expect a similar catastrophe as desribed above.
