However the reason I see it bumping and grinding for decades yet is because we still have the tendency to rescue starving humans. Althemore so if they are members of one of our biggest trading partners.
You think the USA is going to respond to little Jimi who wants milk on his cornies or to China or India starving to death? Remember both are nuclear powers before answering.

Quite right. That's why in my scenario it is not the Chinese or Indians that starve but the population of those African nations that are getting food aid now that will have it diverted to China or India. That population by the way is black, Muslim and has no oil. If you think that won't matter, talk to the people that spent time in the Super-Dome after Katrina.

The main problem with this die-off theory is that forty percent of the population of the planet is currently booming ... Many other high population countries are also growing smartly

The global die-off has begun, but it has a ways to go before it catches up with the on-going global love-in.

Good point about who will suffer, vt. And their sad deaths will do very little to reduce the pressure on world food supplies, since they were consuming so little of it anyway. The increased popularity of the American meat-centered diet, especially in China, is not making things any better. But, as you say, ultimately only so many people can eat on a finite planet.

Keep in mind that the more important die-off, the on-going fifth great mass extinction since the beginning of complex life, has been well underway for decades, at least--hundreds to thousands a day, and certain to accelerate as the ever-grimmer effects of GW really get underway.

I can't remember where this came from but I think it's self-explanatory:

That's a cool chart. It tell us what percent of the population is dependent on which fuels. I don't see the renewables chunk? :P

It's probably that line between cow chips and coal!

The biomass population will probably be much lower than it was back in 1700, because we have severely damaged so much of the biosphere. :(

I doubt that Ludi, considering the onslaught by bulldozers and humans into tropical rainforests. We have to be burning a lot of wood "waste."

In theory it should be easier to manage biomass resources in the future, in the medieaval times it was just slash and burn (well it still is in some places :( ).

With a bit of luck future generations will manage the resources better and plant new trees to replace all those removed (everywhere).

There is likely to be a period of time when there is a serious shortage of fuel until the population restabalises at a nuch lower level.
Ronald Coase, Nobel Economic Sciences, said in 1991 “If we torture the data long enough, it will confess.”

Re: The post peak mass death and slaughter scenario......:(

Unread postby ObiWan » Sun 25 Dec 2011, 15:24:30

For those who insist that peak oil is obviously a slow crash, Amish nirvana type situation, it is interesting to find what it really once was, before the post peak world itself caused the fast crashers to run lest the laughing deafen them. Take the survey, apparently the post peak mass death and slaughter was a 2010 event. Did we miss that one too?

and the original doomers are all dead, what with how long the crash was in coming. And guess what they got? The Industrial revolution...wasn't THAT a surprise!

Doesn't really matter if it's fast or slow. End result will be the same. Bringing up threads from 7 years ago doesn't accomplish much (maybe if fulfills some sick fetish for you). Nor does speculating on what the future will hold, it is a fun exercise though. It also better to have a plan A, B, and C. I do, one for BAU (doubtful), Slow decline in standard of living (probable) and, SHTF (possible).

Hey trollbegone, what will power the NEXT industrial revolution? If you think that is what will happen?

wishful thinking. The fact is that poor peoples fat is by far more abundant and cheaper to obtain.

Surely you speak metaphoricly besides in jest?
Poor people in western countries are far fatter than rich.
In a serious decline fatties fat may be their own salvation while richies lack of it might not be made up for by cashola? You jive?

Living naturally from the land is a religion where I come from. Literally. I dream of no such revolutions, because to my way of thinking none are required. People just need to think about what they do and live naturally.
