Yep, the 2 biggies haven't changed, population explosion and resource depletion. Even with forced sterilization/ abortion, China is still dominated by instinct.
However the reason I see it bumping and grinding for decades yet is because we still have the tendency to rescue starving humans. Althemore so if they are members of one of our biggest trading partners.

That's why in my scenario it is not the Chinese or Indians that starve but the population of those African nations that are getting food aid now that will have it diverted to China or India. That population by the way is black, Muslim and has no oil. If you think that won't matter, talk to the people that spent time in the Super-Dome after Katrina.

Good point about who will suffer, vt. And their sad deaths will do very little to reduce the pressure on world food supplies, since they were consuming so little of it anyway. The increased popularity of the American meat-centered diet, especially in China, is not making things any better. But, as you say, ultimately only so many people can eat on a finite planet.

Keep in mind that the more important die-off, the on-going fifth great mass extinction since the beginning of complex life, has been well underway for decades, at least--hundreds to thousands a day, and certain to accelerate as the ever-grimmer effects of GW really get underway.

I doubt that Ludi, considering the onslaught by bulldozers and humans into tropical rainforests. We have to be burning a lot of wood "waste."

In theory it should be easier to manage biomass resources in the future, in the medieaval times it was just slash and burn (well it still is in some places ).

With a bit of luck future generations will manage the resources better and plant new trees to replace all those removed (everywhere).

There is likely to be a period of time when there is a serious shortage of fuel until the population restabalises at a nuch lower level.

For those who insist that peak oil is obviously a slow crash, Amish nirvana type situation, it is interesting to find what it really once was, before the post peak world itself caused the fast crashers to run lest the laughing deafen them. Doesn't really matter if it's fast or slow. End result will be the same. Bringing up threads from 7 years ago doesn't accomplish much (maybe if fulfills some sick fetish for you). Nor does speculating on what the future will hold, it is a fun exercise though. It also better to have a plan A, B, and C. I do, one for BAU (doubtful), Slow decline in standard of living (probable) and, SHTF (possible).
