30°C for days in Paris. Never seen before. No rain. Plants in gardens are becoming yellow/grey.
Crops are severily hit by drought since a lot are around Paris. In my childhood, there were lot of rains during spring.
Actually, Paris was known to be awfull to live because of all those rains.
Now, people are happy! (We'll see later when food will reach stratospheric prices)

Edit : Wow, it rained some drops for 10 minutes but it was so hot that water went back in the air almost immediatly.

I hope you're not headed for another summer of '03 situation.

Long term (though exactly how long, no one knows), Paris will be on the northern edge of the Sahara that will now engulf the Iberian Peninsula, the Balkan Peninsula, the Anatolian Peninsula, and probably Italy and parts of southern France.

Before that, killer heat waves throughout Europe will become more and more common and intense.

Best luck in an increasingly scorching future.

We made a record for yesterday's date here--97F--and we're aiming for another one today--100!!

Very weird for MN, especially for early June.

North west UK - Last 2 weeks sunny, occasional rain but mostly cold days, due to north / north east winds from North Sea / Russia.

A/C ? - no thanks, the heating is on occasionally though - quite nippy for June.

Thanks for the update, GAS.

Are you in the Lakeland District (or whatever the locals call it) then?

50 miles south of the Lake District, halfway between Liverpool & Manchester.

Last week on holiday in Bath (near Bristol in SW England) - same weather there also. Sunny, occasional showers, cold winds from north. Not bad, not brilliant.

I get home to Spokane on Thursday and it is supposed to be in the high 60's with lows in the 40's for the next 3 or 4 days.
Plenty of land available if you want to get out of the heat.

Gas, some of my most precious memories are of hiking and hitching up the west side of England, from Weymouth, up through the Lake District, and eventually to Edinburgh. I thought of it all as sacred landscape--the hazy sun breaking through mists on the bluffs above the southern coast, to dark copses above Tintern abbey along the River Wye, to the ancient Celtic earthworks overlooking the Severn at Malvern...-- but I guess that's what you get from a young romantic.

I wish England the best, but fear the worst. Are there any localization/transition town movements going on near you?

I visited Tintern Abbey last week, as well as Bath, and the old castles at Goodrich, Raglan and Chepstow. All are absolutley wonderful places, and still looked after very well. The drive back home from Bath, over the Severn bridge, Wye valley to Tintern, Ross on Wye, then along the A49 road through Hereford Leominster Shrewsbury & Cheshire to home must rank as one of the best scenic drives in the world. I came home last saturday this route, and my thoughts where that everything along the route was in good order - the countryside, the roads, the small country towns and villages passed.

YET as you say, things are changing, for the worse, mainly in big towns & cities. The causes are well known to all (or most) on this site. Bad news every time you switch on the TV - ALL MONEY RELATED. That's the problem with England, money. (not a lack of it - just the transfer of it - to the wealthy)
Just announced Electricity to go up 10%, Nat Gas 19%. Petrol now £1.40 / litre.

We all fear for the future, it don't look (financially) good.

That sounds like about the path I took, but on foot and on 'thumb.'

Glad to hear things are still in order there.

You could well have run into my mum, sis, and niece in Bath, since they were visiting there last week!

Nice points about money.

Best, and Cheerio!

Warmest May ever for New Zealand

Balmy temperatures and sub-tropical conditions saw New Zealand experience its warmest May on record, in a month that included floods, storms and a tornado.

Data from climate agency Niwa shows the month was almost 2.5 degrees Celcius warmer than usual, with rainfall double normal levels...

"Two-point-five degrees doesn't sound like much, but for the average over the whole month that's huge," Renwick said.

"Normally 0.5 of a degree is a record-breaker."

It's even hot here in Maine, but not by the ocean. If you get too hot, come on up here. Anywhere the sea breeze gets to is nice and cool. I was just working in the garden, and even though today isn't too hot, I needed a couple glasses of water to revive myself.

Would that be the result of reduced solar activity coupled with a La Nina, here in the west of Ireland the weather this year has been "different" so far this year, warm and dry in March & April followed by much cooler and wetter weather in May and now we have "April showers" (22 June)
