Is there such a correlation?

No. Not that I ever studied and I took 4 paleontology classes (in addition to all the other normal coursework).

Are you talking about the axis of rotation or the magnetic pole? Slight shifts in direction in the axis of physical rotation are called Milankovich cycles and happen with a varying periodicity of around 100,000+ years. These shifts would greatly change the Earth's climate, thus leading to extinction events of some sort.

There are many bottleneck events in history which happens to come about every 200000 to 300000 yrs just about the same time window as the mag pole shift. Now weather this is wink dink or not who knows but they do have a correlation.

Bottleneck? Do you mean genetic diversity bottleneck within a species caused by a near-extinction event?

RedStateGreen wrote:What Stormbringer might be referring to is the idea that is put forward in the books Path of the Pole and Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings (titles out of my head, might not have gotten them exact). The author suggests that the earth's crust can come loose from the underlying core and start moving much faster than normal, causing both a pole shift and extremely high winds. His hypothesis is that ancient maps show Antarctica as the center of the world, with the other continents around it, which would mean (presumably) that it was livable enough for relatively advanced civilization, thus it was in a different spot relative to the north/south poles.

Don't know if that's what happened, but it would explain the lost continent theory. Hiding right in front of us

I don't know of any isotopic or magnetic evidence from my undergrad studies to support such an idea so recently in the Earth's history.

The idea of the Earth's crust "coming loose" and moving so quickly sounds about as likely as California sliding into and underneath the Pacific after "The Big One".

Very, very, very small chance of that happening. I wouldn't get too excited about it.

The last big eruption there was over a half million years ago. Again, I wouldn't get too excited about it either.

Four earthquakes hit Mexico’s Gulf of California

http://cnnwire.blogs.cnn.com/2009/08/03/four-earthquakes-hit-mexicos-gulf-of-california/

(CNN) — Four earthquakes — with magnitudes of 5.8, 6.9, 5.0 and 5.9 respectively — struck nearly next to each other in the Gulf of California, between the western Mexican states of Baja California and Sonora, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Two earthquakes hit within minutes of each other, just before 11 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (2 p.m. ET). A third one hit about 30 minutes later and a fourth 10 minutes after that.

All four quakes occurred at a depth of about 6 miles, the USGS reported.

7.9 earthquake 120 miles south of American Samoa and 11.2 miles deep; three minutes of shaking and created a 10 foot high tsunami that went about 100 yards inland. Hawaii is expecting 2-3 foot waves.

Though yellowstone, which has always been my passion, is quiet at this time...many many more things close to home for me have peaked my interest...Being from Mo. we have had alot of activity at the New Madrid fault line and of course all the tornados that have plagued the area..( ie Joplin and many other towns) of late...So much activity that it has actually almost been overload. For anyone out there with family and friends in the joplin area you have my thoughts and prayers...My wife has family in Joplin and graduated from Joplin high School... so we shared a deep concern (her grandmother was OK)..I read the threads on yahoo. and see the stories of heroism and have been heartened by such acts of selflessness. Often we seem to become discouraged by the doom and gloom of every day life and such events bring things back into perspective for me...

In this time of peak oil..high gas prices... falling home values...increased food cost...life is becoming more of a task than enjoyment...It is such events that bring to mind that things can always get worse... And to remain grateful for what we have...

Some of you may remember me and for those that dont i will give a short update...For most of my post i was the resident yellowstone follower..I have watched every little hick up old yeller has made for 10 yrs or so, give or take, and have become at least what i like to call a informed idiot on the subject...I have over the years made friends who work for the usgs in yellowstone and am in regular contact with them. So my informational pool runs a bit deeper than most on yellowstone but i still confess to know just enough to make a informed mistake...lol

When last i posted I told many of you about my home as we all have for ie bugout reasons...so i guess i will update you there as well..We are selling our 5000 ft home and moveing to a sustainable 1500 sq ft home in the middle of the woods...This process will take time and will be complete in about a year as we will prep the land for off grid sustainable living...( solar, wind, and water will be completly off gride). This is a lofty experement at best but i hope to achieve this and will keep everyone informed of its progress..

Storm - nice to see you back again! I followed your Yellowstone updates and discussions back in the winter of 2009 tho I doubt I posted to them (I mostly a lurker back then).

I have been following earthquake activity with mild interest since then. I was shocked when Extinction Protocol accurately predicted the Japan earthquake 3 days before the event. I don't like his conclusions tho for obvious reasons. Makes PO look mild in comparision.

What do you think about sinkhole activity? It seems to be on the increase...but then I only have the limited life span of the internet to go by. With all the earthquakes, I think of the ground readjusting from all the shaking...tho I am no expert either.

I know when you watch it looks like so much activity, but really how can we know what is a lot? We think we know so much but there is also so much we don't know. We just had a major landslide here...but there have always been lots of landslides. There was one that went over 100 miles back at the turn of the last century. 8O

The world is so alive when you look and pay attention. So amazing.

In truth we dont know we judge by our own personal experence and by history but we often fail to recognize the rise of tech. Never befor was a sink hole on the other side of the planet local news...So in perspective Have things increased???? who knows..I am for lack of a better term a super doomer..but i also accept things in the perspective that they are...Yellowstone is a prime example...She is without question the most interesting of my watch subjects ..not because of her shear size or her distructive force..But because we just dont know...No one was around the last time she blew and if anyone is around after she blows this time only history will tell...After years of study and research the only gleam of insight i can give you here is to follow your gut...More often than not it will give you good advice if you dont second guess it to much...LOL

I wish i had some though prevoking insight to make the world stand in amazment but thats about it...As ive grown older the only truth i have discovered is the more i learn the more i discover how little i know...

Did anyone see the report of the sun sending a caronal mass ejection toward earth.....on the 7th it was all over yahoo...the high energy particals should have started to reach earth on the 8th through the 12th according to several reports....Have any of you had any problems from this??...IE cell phone disruptions..power outage..????

The site I viewed had this to say about that:

Due to its angle, however, effects on Earth should be fairly small.

Pretty impressive CME, though. Affecting half the surface of the sun!
