Istanbul roasts in 106-year record heatwave

The head of Boğaziçi University Kandilli meteorological observatory, Adil Tek, told daily Hürriyet that the 37.2 Celsius degrees observed in Istanbul on June 29 was “a value measured for the first time in 106 years. This means a record has been broken. We are waiting for another record,” Tek said.

...if we continue to emit CO2 into the atmosphere, we will continue to warm and a larger fraction of the world (and a larger fraction of the world’s population) will experience heatwave conditions (combinations of temperature and relative humidity) that could be deadly.

Dairy cow carcasses pile up following California heat wave
Updated 1:53 pm, Sunday, July 2, 2017

Central California's largest rendering plant is overwhelmed by the number of cows that died during a June heat wave, so officials are allowing dairy farmers to bury or compost hundreds of carcasses.
The unusual run of heat last month — including nine straight days of triple-digit temperatures — and a mechanical malfunction at Baker Commodities have contributed to the overload at the plant, the Fresno Bee reported Friday...

Good/sad catch, mbs.

As many have pointed out, the plants and animals that support us will succumb to heat well before most humans do directly. We are seeing the beginnings of that here.

Global warming tipped scales in Europe’s heat wave

Climate researchers say that globally widespread and simultaneous heat waves are the new normal, and that people should be ready for worse.

It's clear that, because of global warming, it's going to get much warmer in the near future, according to Stefan Rahmstorf, a climate scientist with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.

USA / CA NEW brutal heatwave 120 F on the way!

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... story.html

The heat wave is expected to peak between Friday and Saturday, when it could approach 120 degrees in the Coachella Valley and 112 in Woodland Hills, forecasters said. Burbank, its neighboring cities and communities on either side of the San Bernardino Mountains can also expect to bake in triple-digit heat from Thursday through the weekend, said Stuart Seto, a National Weather Service specialist.

This is really dangerous heat. People need to be taking extreme precautions,” Seto said.

HEAT WAVE OF POTENTIALLY HISTORIC PROPORTIONS HITTING EAST IDAHO / USA
By Journal Staff Jul 4, 2017

Image
http://idahostatejournal.com/news/local ... a1409.html
A potentially historic heat wave began roasting East Idaho Wednesday with temperatures even hotter than forecasters expected.

Wednesday’s high temperature reached 100 degrees in Pocatello, tying the previous record for July 5 set in 1981. Idaho Falls’ high temperature on Wednesday hit 99 degrees, breaking the previous record for July 5 of 96 degrees set in 1990.

The National Weather Service says East Idaho will continue experiencing temperatures up to and possibly over 100 degrees through Sunday and possibly into next week. If the hot weather continues well into next week this heat wave could set a record for being the longest in East Idaho’s history.......

According to your cute little (uncited) chart, as of 2017, roughly 100 million people have already died from overheating. (Since globally, we're doing basically nothing about AGW mitigation thus far).

You'd think this would have made the news, wouldn't you?

By the way your comment "maybe home sapiens too" seems rather in conflict with the chart, if this event is a big deal. Is it or isn't it?

When you post (non-credible) stuff like that, it takes away from your overall message that intensifying global heat waves are a serious concern (and they are). So why do that?

Shortly after recovering from a weeklong heatwave at the start of the month that sent the thermometer soaring as high as 45 degrees Celsius in some parts, Greece is now bracing for another week of daytime highs in the 40C region, according to meteorologists, who say the new heatwave is expected to peak on Wednesday. Air conditioners fuel power consumption in Balkan heat wave

BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbia’s state power company says electricity consumption has soared as a heat wave hit the country this week and people switched on air conditioners in their homes.

The EPS company said Tuesday power consumption is about one-fifth higher than the average for July, reaching record highs.

Temperatures this week in the Balkans have reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), prompting the authorities in Serbia and Croatia to issue warnings to people to stay away from the sun and drink water.

Spain heatwave breaks records and kills one

Spain baked in a record-breaking heatwave on Thursday which was blamed for the death of a road crew worker and is suspected of leaving another man in critical condition.

The 54-year-old male victim died of suspected heatstroke late Wednesday while laying asphalt near the town of Moron de la Frontera in the southwestern province of Seville, emergency services said.

Temperatures reached 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in Moron de la Frontera on Wednesday. Spain's largest union said it was investigating how long the man had been working and if the crew had taken special precautions because of the heat.

A 50-year-old man is also critical in hospital after suffering heatstroke on Thursday while replacing pipes in Cabeza del Buey, a town in the southwestern province of Badajoz, local media reported.

Spain's meteorological agency said seven cities including the capital Madrid set record temperatures for the month of July on Thursday. It soared to 40.2 degrees Celsius in Madrid, smashing a previous record of 39.6 degrees Celsius recorded in 2015. New record highs were also set in Badajoz, Caceres, Ciudad Real, Cordoba, Jaen and Teruel.

The heatwave—caused by a mass of hot air from northern Africa—will last until at least Sunday, officials say.

Southern Europe gripped by record-high heatwave

Image

A heatwave has gripped southern Europe with temperatures rocketing above 40C in parts of Spain. Wildfires have been sparked in Italy and tourist sites in Greece have been shut because of the heat. Blazes have broken out across southern Italy and Sicily, where the temperatures have also climbed above 40C this week.
“There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.” ― Leonardo da Vinci

Insensible before the wave so soon released by callous fate. Affected most, they understand the least, and understanding, when it comes, invariably arrives too late.

It's summer there is always a heat wave or record temperature somewhere. I don't get excited over new temperature records, statistically they will happen every day somewhere. NOAA has a temperature record dataset that has 123 years of daily records. That's 365 daily temps x 123 years. And they have over 1000 (maybe 1500) temperature measuring stations across the US. Worldwide there is close to 100,000 stations. So for 2017 the statistical chance of new high record temperature happening somewhere in the world is going to be 365/123 = 3 new records per station per year multiplied by 100000 stations gives 300000 new records per year or 25000 per month or 800 per day.

For example earlier this week 2017-7-11 NOAA tells us there were 3 tied and 3 broken record highs out 1495 possibles in the US a little below the statistical average, a cool wave?

Riiiight.

But the same data shows that the number of record highs have been surpassing record lows for the last four decades, with the most recent years having the highest ratios of highs vs lows. One would expect in normal climate the about the same number of records would be broken each year in each direction. Soooo, something does indeed seem to be 'going on' based on these ratios of record temps.
