Dutch MP posts Islam film on web

Unread postby Bas » Thu 27 Mar 2008, 15:56:21

Dutch right-wing politician Geert Wilders has posted a controversial film critical of Islam's holy book, the Koran, on the internet.
The opening scenes show a Koran, followed by footage of the attacks on the US on 11 September 2001.

The 15-minute film was posted on a video-sharing website.

Its planned release had sparked angry protests in Muslim countries. The Dutch government has dissociated itself from Mr Wilders' views.

The film is called "Fitna", a Koranic term sometimes translated as "strife". Dutch broadcasters have declined to show it.

Images from the bomb attacks on London in July 2005 and Madrid in March 2004 are also shown.

edit: first reactions are that the movie is not as shocking/insulting as first expected.

You could do something along these lines with all religions. I dunno what this Dutch dude's getting so excited about.

Waste of money and time if you ask me. Anyoner with half a brain would know that Islam and all religions in general are a pack of fuedalistic mumbo jumbo.

Do Muzlims seem like the type of intelligent people that would be able to track you down and hurt you from your internet postings? I doubt it. No need to protect yourself.

The movie isn't all that offensive, really. But I am not a muslim, so I can't speak to that.
As polemic/propaganda, it's rather crude, and unsophisticated.
I have seen better from Aryan/Nazi groups, and 9/11 Truthers.

What I find rather disturbing is that it's being censored by the Dutch government, and internet providers. That is scarier than the film.
I guess these entities fear the Muslim horde as much as the film-maker.

That should tell you more about the issue than the film itself. It actually helps this guys argument.

The entire purpose of this movie is to create fear and hate. :x

The result of showing the 9/11 attacks, a crying women, a lot of blood, a few angry imams and some well chosen quotes from the Koran is a negative emotional response. And the popularity of Geert Wilders is the direct result of these emotions.

americandream wrote:I dunno what this Dutch dude's getting so excited about.

It's all about votes! If Geert Wilders is really interested in making things better he would use all his energy to promote mutual-understanding and respect, not fear and hate.

btw...
I expected more from this movie.
It's only 15 minutes long and extremely boring.

Well at least one thing is clear, Wilders doesn't have a clue when it comes to Peak Oil. He's even pissing off quite a few oil-producing nations. But he would definitely be in favor of reducing reliance of oil coming from Islamic countries. Maybe not for the right reasons but hell, anything that gets us of oil will do!

The first guy, Mohammed Rabbae, says that he hopes all Muslims & Muslim-organizations will react the same on this movie, which is responding calm and democratic. In between these segments, it is said that Wilders finds it very odd that people react on his movie when it hasn't even been released yet. Mohammed Rabbae says its never to early to talk about these kinds of things. The second man, Aissa Meziani, expects it to stay quiet. "People from that region (Limburg, Province of the Netherlands) are patient and will respond when necessary". The third gentleman in the audience wants to enter debate with supporters of Wilders.

By the way, this video is from when the Fitna-movie wasn't public yet. All in all, it seems these Muslims seem very reasonable and eager to enter in debate with people who agree with Wilders.

I saw it yesterday when it was released. Its overdone and melodramatic by US production standards, but then its mainly targetted at the Dutch audience.

The Dutch fears about this movie seem to have been exaggerated, so far. No riots, no bombings, no murders have occurred.

Everything in it seems to be factual (even if those those facts aren't all "PC").

The quotes from the Koran and Sura are respectfully done, with a beautiful Koran being read in Arabic and the translation shown beside the book.

Just your basic unpopular free speech.

well, I couldn't get the video to play and indeed expected it to be much more inciteful then it actually was. That and me wanting to stay neutral in this promted me to write what I did. Also I'm not a big fan of Wilders (understatement) and I generally dislike the monotheistic religions.

Did it have that effect on you? Do you hate and fear Moslems now?

I remember you posted earlier that the movie would somehow cause people to start rioting and killing other people.

Now that you've seen it---did it cause you to do a criminal act in protest against the film? 8)
