Saudi oil boom eases U.S. fears of coup

Saudi Arabia: Oil market at comfortable level

I have been saying that I believe that the US will pull out of Iraq in order to get out of the way of the forces in Iraq that want civil war. I believe they will do this so that they can back the Sunni faction in the war, thus forming a tacit proxy for their buddies the Saudis. In this way the Saudis can gain control of the Iraqi oilfields just in time to ramp up production to meet marginal world demand. All that they need is for Saddam to go away so that the Sunnis in Iraq are not conflicted and can cooperate.
Something is going on, however, that alarms me. The internet is alive with rumors that Israel will attack Iran in March. Now the US and UK are beginning to talk about withdrawal after the Iraqi election. They probably don't want the problems that their presence on the ground in Iraq would cause if Israel did attack Iran.
I have always believed that the return of the US to Iraq in force to intervene in the Iraqi civil war would be timed to a certain level of drop in reserves in the Saudi fields. Could it be that the Israeli intervention is a design to speed things up? Could it be that the Saudis have even less oil than anyone has guessed? |
