I think it would be enormously valuable to have a history section where people can discuss and share historical information. Certainly historical comparisons would be valuable and "how-things-where-done" in the past.
The main reason I'm suggesting this was a disturbing thought I had while reading some of the threads relating to "back-to-basics" efforts. This reminded me starkly of the "back-to-nature" movement of Germany's population, particularly the youth, during the late 20's and early 30's. This led to the disasterous outcomes of WW2.
There are also parallels with the 60's hippie movement here on this continent which led to the baby boomer cult of extreme consumption.
This history should be a clear warning to us all concerning the outcomes of the disappointments experienced by these past utopian periods.
The section doesn't all have to be negative, it could be a great resource for skills and knowledge from the past that will be useful in the future. I personally have good experience and knowledge of steam engines. _________________ Gravity is not a force, it is a boundary layer.

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses became angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. 15 Moses said to them, "Have you allowed all the women to live? 16 These women here, on Balaam's advice, made the Israelites act treacherously against the LORD in the affair of Peor, so that the plague came among the congregation of the LORD. 17 Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man by sleeping with him. 18 But all the young girls who have not known a man by sleeping with him, keep alive for yourselves.

History is good...Jared Diamond's book, Collapse, is most interesting. The trouble is, many of us aren't well prepared for discussions of history or anthropology... _________________ Dieoff. Fun to watch. Better with hot buttered popcorn!

I don’t know anything about Germany but it’s interesting that you say the back to the land / hippy thing resulted in today’s US consumerism. I would like to see the logic behind that as well - I’ve always seen that as the birthplace of the popular environmental movement here. And as one at the tail of that generation, my impression is BTTL vs. “working for the Man” was (and still is) on opposite ends of the spectrum. Why not start a thread and see where it goes?
And by all means post some steam basics in the Planning or even Energy forums.
