They are planning to increase their aircraft production in the coming years. With jet fuel prices all time high and peak oil around the corner, why would any aircraft manufacturer want to increase production. You have to be crazy to do that.
I understand the demand from India and China, and the new demand for fuel efficient aircraft but when the US and other developed nations's airline industry shrink, there will be thousands and thousands of old aircraft unused and parked.
What are they thinking? Is there something that we do not know.
It comes under the theory of: "IT IS ALL THEY KNOW"
Let me give you some examples
A woman puts glitter on her chest to show off her boobs then gets mad at a man for looking them...it is all she knows.
My moms old Hispanic maid complained about the sexual harassment she got in L.A. What does she do...she gets breast and butt implants.....it is all she knows.
A few months ago CNBC says a large RE builder are building more houses when they already have tons of unsold houses and the market is glutted with foreclosed homes....it is all they know. (What they going to do start growing crops or polishing diamonds.)
Sustainability...lets be honest, we only pay it lip service.
We talk of living in a sustainable world, yet our actions betray our true feelings. All we have to do is to look at the stock market to see what happens when growth declines even a little.
Even if a company yields stable earning, but does not grow its earnings it is looked down upon. Stability and balance is part of a sustainable footprint, yet we shun such balance.
With one breath we talk about cutting global warming and how we have to cut our dependence of fossil fuel.
Then with the next breath we demand no cut backs in our standard of living, we must spend and consume above all else...build more, build faster, build bigger.
The GDP must only go up, up and away...all the while this consumption just increases global warming and keeps depleting the fossil fuels faster and faster.
Sick...sick..sick mentality, buy more cars, build more houses and monstrosities of architecture, spend more but 'cut back' to save our dear fossil fuels.
Our economy is not based on sustainable health - it is based low interest credit to encourage compulsive spending, debt and living a life of constant consumption with a 'disposable mentality' when it comes to durable goods.
All this consumption to artificially fuel our economy to make our retirement funds only go up contributes to more and more global warming and the depletion of our natural resources.
Then the governments juggle the numbers to make the inflation figures seem artificially low, so everyone's retirement portfolio will make them happy so they will continue to buy and consume more...and on it goes....IT IS ALL WE KNOW and the bill is coming due soon!

Just throwing something out here...
A company like AIRBUS has full departments, likely with 100+ people, dedicated to looking at future revenue, costs, demand, etc... And I would bet that many in those departments have education, experience and qualifications far beyond any single poster here.
I'm sure they're not ignorant to the reality of high oil prices.
True the could just be an educated bunch of people living in a bubble totally unaware of the situation.
Or they are aware of the situation but they are just going along with business as usual, which is to expand, not contract because then everyone would freak.
If they have the orders, they should fill them.
If they are just planning to bump up production because they believe the market will continue to demand their planes, they are out of their minds... _________________ Tired of high gas prices? Then stop driving to work, duh..... Learn to Work from home

In France they have to work for their mortgage handouts. US doesn't have to work, so GM can cut productions. _________________ People first, then things, then dollars.

Well if Airbus has 100+ people looking at demand and cost in the future, same as for Ford, GM and Chrysler. And look at the rumors on the market, people are talking about Ford's bankruptcy.
I would count more on a peakoiler old wise guy in this forum than hundreds of youngsters from ivy league schools. It is not the SAT score that counts it is the years of experience in energy industry and life experience.

There's plenty of high SATs in here as well, to be sure. They're just not employed in the position of "infinite growth yes-men". _________________ "It's called the American Dream because you'd have to be asleep to believe it."

But what you want for Airbus to do? Close the doors and move to the islands? The price of oil is the same for all of us, some are more touched by it than others, but who at this site has ended its daily routine today? Nobody. It's life as usual. Just a little tighter. They aren't crazy, they're just trying to make a buck, like all of us.

Actually they are counting on high oil prices,
to force airliners to retire old less fuel efficient planes early in favor of new ones like the A380.
Ofcourse it remains to be seen if this "bet" pays off, certainly not in the long run I'd say, but maybe it will in the short to medium term if world oil production stays on the plateau long enough... _________________ "The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time."

Maybe Airbus has an ultra-secret new prototype aircraft that doesn't use any fossil fuel... if not, in the long term, they're crazy. _________________ anagami.net

Given their expertise in light alloys, plastics, aerodynamics etc.,
this company could be a good candidate to retool into mass manufacturing ~500kg (safe), 300mpg EVs ala Loremo.
The government control/handout and subsidy links are strong in Airbus, they could turn over large chunk of the EU's passanger/light truck car fleet to higher efficiency in a decade.
In addition, they could be taken over by Alstom likes to work only on highspeed trains 160-300km/h.

Could/should/ is it going to happen?
Most likely not, I bet they will spend next 20yrs rat-racing on some deadend crap visions like CTL,GTL, bio fuel substitution for kerosene and then just go belly up.. _________________ DOOMerotron: at all-time high [8.1] out of 10..

Nope.. People are rich and control ever more money because they were rich and controlled lots of money..
Mostly they employ clever people who arent rich to do their thinking for them - accountants, investment advisors. The system's rigged that way, increasingly so since the end of the sixties. Wealth is concentrated into ever fewer and richer hands.
