well, you don't need to get drunk, but a glass of wine is often good. How did you learn it? And how drinkable are your outcomes?

Alcohol distillation
Medicine
Knife sharpening

If I just concentrate on those, I figure I'm good to go.

I've learned mechanical skills from a life's work, that now I apply to a repair business. My Dad told me that, "in hard times, the repairman is king", meaning that people would choose to fix something rather than to buy new.

My back ground:
Grew up on a farm, and worked on the equipment. Mechanical Engineering in college, then career in the auto industry on automation machinery. In the 1970's, we moved to a homestead to deal with the downturn in the auto industry. While our kids grew up, we gardened, logged, and farmed a bit with horses, and made furniture as a sideline to my day job. Ten years of that convinced me that "no man is an island". It was not possible to do everything for lack of time. We sold the farm when our kids were grown and moved to a one acre lot where I started a farm repair shop. I'm 62, and still learning, every day, from experience.

I learned that a lot of the answers to the "meaning of life" question are more reassuring when oil is $15 a barrel.

Hey! I've been looking for those answers. Spill the beans.

I am in the process of learning how to raise wool sheep and process wool for making felt. Eventually I hope to make felt clothing and other useful items.

Learning from the internets and trial and error. Smile

Still very much in the hobbyist stage.

besides gardening...

Animal husbandry and home dairying (chickens and dairy goats, mostly)
Various food preservation methods (canning, pickling, drying)
Community building - a skill that will become more valuable as time goes on, I suspect.

Some things I have learned from other individuals. Some things I have learned through trial and error.

I've been working on that, too. Mostly by depending on others for help while learning about things like horses, cattle, pasture refurb, gardening and a host of other things I didn't learn growing up in the suburbs! But also, I've been getting involved in the community in which I live - kids groups, civic organizations, etc.

I've often suggested that in a post-PO world we will have to deal with Communities of Geography rather than Communities of Choice. The latter lets us ignore our neighbors in favor of an online community, or interest groups that require travel. In a world of constrained resources, you might not have that luxury so you'd better get to know the people around you.

There is an inverse relationship between the price of oil and the divinity of man.

Have a nice day.
