I've followed peak oil pretty closely over the past few years and I'm honestly freaked out at this point. I never really believed that it would actually happen so vividly and pointedly as it has over the past year, and I've indulged in a little denial recently, but I dont think thats really going to work now. I'd like to believe that theres some vast conspiracy to push food and energy prices to new levels whats the best argument someone can put forward to show it, I'd like something else to believe please.

zoidberg, I agree, it seems unlikely there is some sort of "vast conspiracy" to push up oil and cause food shortages. BUT! I reckon we'll see 'price adjustments' as soon as Hillary drops out of the race, it's possible prices will continue to drop slightly in the run up to the U.S elections, once the candidates have been confirmed and are off and finally running.
The conspiracy is simply that corporations took over just about every vital institution for running the world economy. This has happened over a long period, and now that the take over is complete, the consequences are manifesting. It's easy to think some evil conspiracy is at work aiming to kill off large swathes of the world's population, by virus, and now hunger. This would work, if countries were all run by the same brand of asshole as runs America. Fortunately, there are less assholes in Malaysia, Thailand, China and India for example, and these people will eventually bring the situation back into some kind of balance, although it will not resemble what we've come to expect.
Most of what we're witnessing is actually the death of the free market dogma, the decline of "cap-it-all-itis". I don't mean we shall soon be reverting to ancient ways, that could only happen if we had paid no attention whatsoever to the past 200 years or so. But I am prepared to accept that I don't know where we're headed, except it can only be some place better. It is always easier to foresee collapse, decline, crumbling destruction, it's never easy to visualise what unforeseen developments may arise from the chaotic and unpredictable.
And if this brand of positivism doesn't do it for you, then let's just sing along to Micki's post ......

Yeah it is surprising, all that's happened recently has confirmed what I talk about all the time about how the insiders have control of the playing field. And you do well to be freaked out, things that not a long time ago were in the province of theoretical discussion in a fringe group like us (for mainstream society) are starting to unfold, and everything is downhill from now on.
We are in uncharted terrain now, things may last for months as they are, or something may give up all the sudden. It is time to stock up, just in case... _________________ Stocking up on popcorn

mmasters - I don't agree that it's as fine as you suggest.
Too many people, failing economies worldwide, lots of "liquidity" squishing around = price of basic goods - read food and commodities - go up. _________________ Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. I happen to like the fruits of the corporations. I like cheap razor blades and vodka, good music, cheap but well-built furniture, cheap food, I like the boot to be pressed down on the neck of the third world. What's wrong with it?

Yea, but this is about me, so therefore my own thread. The slight different twist is that I've actually been engaging in a little bit of denial about it. But last night I freaked out a couple of close friends about it when I recognized they'll ignore the warning signs until the end, and absolutely refuse to think about the implications of vast increases in food and energy. Then I recognized the same things in myself, as of late, blaming speculators, making fun of 80 kg limits on rices purchases etc.
So yes I borrowed a chunk of your meme, but its a little different and I wanted to talk about myself a bit, so there.

I've noticed that one of the easiest ways to freak yourself out is to actually find someone who will listen to you talk about peak oil and related matters as much as you want. When your done telling them the whole story they're looking at you like "WHAT?", and you're actually looking at yourself the same way because you have been listening to yourself talk and you realize how awful it all sounds.
It really sucks, and yet it's going to be one of the most exciting and challenging times to be alive in all of history, if you like change that is.
In 100,000 years, if someone showed you a timeline of human history and said you could live during any period, I'll bet the 2000-2050 period would look like an interesting time to be alive.
Right now, though, we're all just like a bunch of nervous horses jostling around in the starting gate. _________________

Have you actually found anyone who, at the end of telling them all this, actually accepts it right off and doesn't immediately go into protective denial? If so you must have one hell of a presentation.
