Foodprices in Australia

I was in Woolies today, and I found the prices significantly higher than the last time (before easter).
I always thought that there are less dramatic increases here than maybe in the US, but this time I found it quite drastic.
Milk is still dirt cheap, don't know why.

Just got back from Woolies myself.
Have to say I didn't expect to carry $70 worth of food in one hand.
Quite a few of the items were even of the cheaper brands like "home brand".

From the news reports in 2007, it looks like things will be getting
worse by summer...

Vegetable prices are not very improtant, as most people have gardens even those who don't have plenty possibilities in community gardens etc.. So don't complain if your garden shows only lawn.
What I think hurts most is meat. Flour is more expensive as well, but the difference are only some cents. We don't buy eggs, but I expect a raise in "scratch mix".

The rise in food prices could could lead to more foreclosures and or slow the economy.

At some point we should see a lot of gardens having veggie beds.
Easy to also keep a few chooks in a pen and feed them left overs etc. But as with most things I think it takes a bit of pain before people start reacting. A lot of busy people just don't want to add on the effort. Easy to grow things like fruit trees etc take a fairly long time before they start yielding.
And then it is a matter of watering to get quantity/quality. If there are restrictions in place people need to squeece in large rain water tanks or install bore water pumps.

Will be interesting to see how it impacts on restaurant prices.
Can imagine these will suffer first by people having less money and secondly from having to increases prices themselves.

There more I think of it I don't see how RBA's rate hikes are going to lead to anything good. Prices of life necessities are shooting up no matter what RBA does and all they do is kill off non-essential purchasing leading to recession. I am not that optimistic about Australia's situation.

What are RBA rates?
I don't think that it is a pain starting a veggie patch and having some chooks. The kids love it and they are lots more interesting for them as a bird in a cage.
However it will be lots more difficult as the Australian soils are poor and we often by sugar cane mulch and organic extra. This will be lots more expensive as transportation prices will soar.
How bad must the economy be damaged before they allow us having a rooster?

I work for woolies and recently I've been doing relay work which is when isle get lengthened- shortened and one thing i've notice that they are cutting down on the variety of most product categories.

The sales are down and I think bracing for hard times. Very Happy
